Why We Built This Website
U.S. court systems are not uniform. A statewide portal may work in one state while another state may require a county-by-county or court-by-court search. Some systems show docket entries, some show case summaries, and some require a clerk request for older files or certified copies.
Our goal is to make those differences clear without forcing readers to jump between multiple generic websites.
How We Build a Court-Record Guide
- Understand the user’s intent. We determine what someone searching the topic is likely trying to accomplish.
- Locate the controlling official source. We identify the relevant court, clerk, judiciary, government office, statute, rule, or corrections resource.
- Check the process. We review what happens after the official website opens: menu choices, search fields, published fees, forms, and access limits.
- Write practical instructions. We explain what to click, what information to enter, and what result the user should expect.
- Add fallback options. Where appropriate, we explain what to do when an online search does not return the needed record.
- Human review before publication. Important links, steps, and factual claims are checked by a human member of our editorial team.
Human Review
Our content operation includes an office-based writing team and a U.S.-based writer familiar with U.S. educational and research content. We review important steps and source links before publication.
How We Use AI
AI may assist with research organization, drafting, language improvement, or quality checks. It is not treated as a court, legal authority, or final source of truth.
What We Can Help With — and What We Cannot Do
| We can explain | We cannot do |
|---|---|
| Where official searches may be available | Issue or certify court records |
| What search fields and docket terms mean | Guarantee identity from a name match |
| How to locate a clerk or court request path | Seal, expunge, alter, or remove an official record |
| What an official portal says about coverage | Provide individualized legal advice |
| How official and commercial resources differ | Act as a consumer reporting agency |
How the Website Is Funded
criminalcourtrecord.org/ may earn revenue through advertising and affiliate relationships with third-party services, including background-check or public-record services.
Commercial relationships do not make a private service an official court source. We aim to disclose material affiliate relationships clearly. Read our Affiliate Disclosure.
Accuracy, Corrections, and Updates
Court websites, fees, forms, office procedures, and database coverage can change. If you find an outdated link, changed process, incorrect fee, or other material issue, email info@criminalcourtrecord.org and include the page URL plus the information you believe needs review.
