How We Research, Verify, and Publish Court-Record Guides
Our editorial standard is simple: a page should help a real person complete a real task. We prioritize authoritative sources, local accuracy, practical instructions, and transparent limitations.
User Intent First
We write for the task behind the search, not simply to fill a keyword page.
Official Sources First
Courts, clerks, judiciary systems, statutes, rules, and government agencies receive priority when they control the process.
Local Accuracy
We do not assume that a process in one state or county applies everywhere else.
No False Certainty
We do not treat a name match as identity or an arrest as a conviction.
Our Source Hierarchy
- Official court, judiciary, or clerk systems that maintain the relevant record or process.
- Official statutes, court rules, forms, administrative orders, fee schedules, and government instructions.
- State or local agencies such as departments of corrections or law-enforcement agencies where they maintain the relevant public information.
- Other authoritative institutional sources needed for context.
- Third-party sources for comparison or common-user questions, not as a replacement for an available controlling official source.
What We Verify Before Publication
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Official URL and agency identity | Prevents a commercial or unrelated page from being presented as official. |
| Jurisdiction coverage | A “statewide” search may still exclude municipal, specialty, or older records. |
| Search fields | Users need to know whether they can search by name, case number, citation, date, or another identifier. |
| Record scope | Some portals show dockets but not document images; others exclude sealed, juvenile, or older cases. |
| Fees and copy methods | Viewing may be free while copies or certified copies may carry a fee. |
| Fallback path | If online search fails, a clerk request, archive request, written form, or in-person visit may be needed. |
Human Review
Important factual claims, official links, and step-by-step instructions are reviewed by a person before publication.
AI-Assisted Work
AI may assist with organization, drafting, editing, or quality checks, but it is not treated as an authoritative legal or court source.
Corrections and Material Updates
We may update a page when a portal changes, a government link moves, a fee changes, a form is replaced, or a material factual issue is identified.
To request a correction, email info@criminalcourtrecord.org with the page URL, the exact statement or link at issue, and an official supporting source when available.
Editorial Independence
Advertising and affiliate compensation may support the website. Compensation does not make a commercial provider an official court source and does not remove our responsibility to distinguish paid relationships from government resources.
