Cuyahoga County Criminal Records Search: Find Cases, Dockets & Public Records
Need to search a criminal case in Cleveland, Parma, Lakewood, Euclid, Shaker Heights or elsewhere in Cuyahoga County? The correct search depends on which court handled the case.
For an adult felony case, start with the Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts Criminal Docket Search. For municipal misdemeanor and traffic cases, use the specific municipal court’s records system. For a fingerprint-based Ohio criminal history check, use Ohio BCI.
The county’s Public Defender recommends opening the official Clerk docket, agreeing to the conditions of use, selecting Criminal Search, searching by defendant name or case number, and clicking Docket on the matching case. For Cleveland misdemeanor charges, the municipal court has a separate public case-search system.

How to Search Cuyahoga County Felony Criminal Court Records
The Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas General Division handles adult felony criminal matters. Its official case docket provides online access to selected public case information maintained by the Clerk of Courts.
Follow these official docket-search steps
-
Open the Clerk’s Case Records Search
Visit the official Cuyahoga County docket website. If the direct address is temporarily unavailable, open the Clerk of Courts homepage and use the Case Docket link.
-
Agree to the Conditions of Use
The county’s published criminal docket instructions direct users to select Yes after reviewing the conditions. This opens the Searches page.
-
Select Criminal Search
Choose Criminal Search rather than Civil Search or another docket category. This is the route used for Common Pleas criminal cases.
-
Search by case number or defendant name
If you have a case number, use it first. Otherwise search by the defendant’s name and provide as much accurate identifying information as the form allows, such as date of birth.
-
Click Submit Search
The system may show a single case or a list of people with matching names. Review the results carefully before selecting one.
-
Open the matching case
Click the case number to view the case. The county’s instructions also explain that selecting a defendant’s name may display a list of associated cases.
-
Select Docket
Open the Docket area. The entries begin with the most recent case activity, so scroll through earlier events if you need the original indictment, arraignment, plea or sentencing history.
-
Review the final court outcome
Look for the disposition of each charge, judgment, sentencing entry, dismissal, acquittal or other final ruling. An indictment or charge by itself is not proof of conviction.
-
Request missing documents from the Clerk
Some filing PDFs are not published online. The county’s instructions specifically note that certain case types, including sexual assault matters, may have no document images available remotely.
The county expressly states that online docket information is provided for convenience and may not include every document in the official court file. If you need an official judgment or certified disposition, request it through the Clerk of Courts rather than relying only on a screenshot.

Cleveland and Suburban Cuyahoga County Misdemeanor Records
This is where many searches go wrong. Cuyahoga County’s Common Pleas docket is not a universal search for every misdemeanor and traffic case filed in a municipal court.
The county has 13 municipal court districts, including Cleveland and surrounding suburban courts. Their jurisdictions do not always match municipal boundaries one-to-one.
Cleveland Municipal Court Criminal Case Search
Cleveland Municipal Court provides a separate Public Access system for criminal, traffic and other matters handled by that court.
-
Open Cleveland Municipal Court Public Access
Visit the official Public Access page.
-
Read the court’s disclaimer and select I Accept
The link directs you to the court’s case-information and payment portal.
-
Choose the appropriate case search
Use the case-number or name-search fields supported by the current interface. If searching for a traffic matter, the ticket number may be useful.
-
Confirm the case details and court date
Read the available charge, docket history, current court status and hearing information. Online updates can lag behind recent court actions.
-
Contact the Municipal Clerk when necessary
For official copies, clarification of a recent ruling or missing records, contact the court directly.

Which other municipal courts should you check?
Use the official Public Defender’s municipal court directory to access the correct local court. The directory includes these courts:
Parma and Southwest Suburbs
Parma Municipal Court serves Parma and several surrounding communities, including Parma Heights, Seven Hills, North Royalton, Broadview Heights and Brooklyn.
Search Parma Municipal Court even when the alleged offense occurred outside the City of Parma but within its jurisdiction.
Bedford and Eastern Suburbs
Bedford Municipal Court serves a wider eastern and southeastern district that includes communities such as Solon, Warrensville Heights, Bedford Heights and Orange.
Do not assume an offense in Solon is recorded by Cleveland Municipal Court.
Rocky River and Western Suburbs
Rocky River Municipal Court serves communities including Westlake, Fairview Park, North Olmsted and Bay Village under applicable jurisdiction rules.
Shaker Heights Area
Shaker Heights Municipal Court handles matters within its statutory district, including Beachwood, University Heights and other communities listed by Ohio law.
An initial felony appearance or preliminary proceeding may be in a municipal court before the felony proceeds to Common Pleas Court. If you cannot find the final felony case locally, check the Common Pleas docket for a later indictment and case number.
Docket interpretation
How to Read Cuyahoga County Criminal Court Dockets and Case Status
A docket is a chronological record of what happened in the case. It may list filings, motions, hearing notices, plea proceedings, judgments and other actions.
| Docket term | What it generally means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Indictment | Formal criminal charges returned through the grand jury process | An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction |
| Arraignment | Initial court proceeding to address charges and plea | Useful for identifying early case events |
| Pretrial hearing | Court hearing before trial | May indicate the next required appearance |
| Plea entry | Formal plea relating to one or more charges | Review the accepted plea and later judgment |
| Journal entry | Court’s recorded order or action | Often relevant to verifying an official ruling |
| Sentencing entry | Record of the court’s sentence where applicable | Useful when confirming the outcome of a conviction |
| Dismissed / Not guilty | A charge or case was dismissed, or a not-guilty determination occurred | Must not be reported as a conviction |
| Appeal | Review proceeding in an appellate court | The trial court outcome may be challenged or modified |
If you have a required court appearance, confirm the latest date, time and courtroom with the court or your attorney. A downloaded docket from an earlier day is not a substitute for current instructions from the court.
Researching Cuyahoga felony case trends by statute
The Common Pleas Court also offers a separate Criminal Case Search by Ohio Revised Code dashboard. You can search by Ohio Revised Code section and narrow results by judge.
Unlike the general defendant docket, this dashboard covers cases terminated after January 1, 2025, and excludes sealed or expunged matters. It is useful for researching how a particular charge appears in recent completed cases, but not for reconstructing a person’s complete history.

Are Cuyahoga County Criminal Record Searches Free?
The public Common Pleas docket is available without a general name-search fee. Copies, certifications and formal state background checks may have different costs.

|---|---|---|
| Common Pleas public criminal docket search | Free online public access | County Clerk of Courts |
| Clerk Legal Division public-record copies below 33 pages | No copying charge under the stated policy | Clerk Public Records Policy |

Confirm the calculation and any certification or mailing cost with the records desk rather than assuming the online docket fee schedule covers your exact document request.

Cuyahoga County Jail, Inmate and Ohio Prison Records
A jail booking is separate from a criminal case disposition. If you are trying to locate someone who may currently be detained, the Sheriff’s Office and Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction offer different routes.
Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Inmate Information
The Sheriff’s website explains how to find information about people held in the Corrections Center and other facilities used by the county.
The official Sheriff app provides daily jail rosters, corrections updates and related resources.
Best for: Local jail custody and facility information.
Open Sheriff’s Inmate Information →Ohio DRC Offender Search
Use the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction offender database for people in Ohio state prison, under qualifying department supervision or judicially released.
You can search by name, offender number, status or County of Commitment.
Best for: State prison and post-release supervision information.
Open Ohio DRC Offender Search →How to search Ohio DRC by Cuyahoga County
Open the official Offender Search
Choose the name-search form or enter an offender number when known.
Use County of Commitment if helpful
Select Cuyahoga County to identify qualifying cases committed from the county.
Select a status if necessary
Options include incarcerated, released, APA supervision and violators at large.
Check the identity and custody details
Compare the name, offender number, conviction information and available status before drawing conclusions.
Ohio DRC explains that County of Commitment indicates the county associated with the sentence, while Residential County relates to certain supervision records. A person may live somewhere else or have criminal matters involving multiple counties.
Official state criminal history
Ohio BCI Background Checks for Cuyahoga County Residents
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) maintains the state’s fingerprint-based criminal-history repository. Unlike public court dockets, BCI’s computerized criminal histories are not unrestricted public records.
You can request your own Ohio criminal history for accuracy review. Authorized employment, licensing and other checks generally use the official WebCheck process with the proper purpose code and recipient.

-
Read the Attorney General’s Record Review instructions
Check the identification, fingerprint, consent and payment requirements.
-
Find a WebCheck provider
Use the official WebCheck location search to find participating fingerprint services in or near Cuyahoga County. Contact the provider before visiting.
-
Bring valid identification
BCI requires identifying information, fingerprints and the person’s signed consent for the personal-record process.
-
Pay the appropriate fees
The Attorney General lists a $22 BCI processing fee for an individual’s own record request. A fingerprinting provider may charge a separate convenience or service fee.
-
Review the response for mistakes
If a charge, disposition or identity detail appears incorrect, gather supporting court records and contact the originating agency as directed by BCI.
The Ohio Attorney General’s WebCheck list includes locations in Cuyahoga County. Some operate by appointment and have different BCI-only, FBI-only or combined processing charges. Do not assume the state’s $22 fee is the final retail fingerprinting price.
Searching the Cuyahoga Common Pleas docket by name does not establish someone’s complete Ohio criminal history. A public docket result can involve a different person with the same name, while BCI uses fingerprints for identity association.
Registry-specific public records
Cuyahoga County Sex Offender Registry Search
The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Offender Registration and Notification Unit registers qualifying sex offenders and provides public-awareness information through its official registry resources.
The Sheriff’s website offers photo-search and email-alert options. Registration and public-notification requirements depend on Ohio law and the individual’s classification.
A registry search is not a complete criminal background check. Not every offense requires registration, and an individual’s registry status should not be used to infer facts that are not reported by the official source.
Ohio record clearing
Sealed, Expunged and Restricted Criminal Records in Cuyahoga County
Ohio allows eligible people to apply to seal or expunge certain criminal records. However, eligibility depends on the charge, conviction level, final discharge, other pending cases, statutory waiting periods and applicable exclusions.
Ohio Legal Help explains that the law was expanded in 2023 and updated again in September 2025. Therefore, older guides stating that adult conviction records cannot be expunged may no longer reflect current law.
Sealing a record
Sealing restricts ordinary public access. Certain authorized employers, licensing agencies and criminal justice organizations may still be able to access records under the law.
Expunging a record
Expungement generally involves permanent destruction of records, subject to narrow statutory exceptions. It is not interchangeable with sealing.

Why Your Cuyahoga County Criminal Records Search Finds No Case
| Problem | Possible reason | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Common Pleas search shows no case | Matter may be municipal, not felony; wrong spelling or other identifying data | Check the relevant municipal court and try the case number |
| Defendant has a common name | Several people may share the same name | Use date of birth and other permitted identifiers; do not assume a match |
| Docket appears but document PDF is missing | Some filings or case types do not display images remotely | Contact the Clerk’s record-copy desk |
| Docket shows only recent entries | Entries are generally presented newest first | Scroll back through earlier docket events |
| Cleveland traffic or misdemeanor case missing | Wrong local court or wrong search interface | Use Cleveland Municipal or the appropriate suburban municipal court |
| Jail booking found but no criminal judgment | Custody record is separate from the prosecution outcome | Locate the relevant court case and final disposition |
| Old case no longer publicly visible | It may be sealed, expunged, archived or otherwise restricted | Ask the custodian about lawful availability |
| Federal case missing | Federal courts use a different records system | Search PACER |
The correct search requires the proper court, accurate identifiers and an understanding of legal access restrictions. Equally, finding a criminal charge is not evidence that the person was convicted.
Accuracy and lawful use
Can You Use Cuyahoga County Criminal Records for Background Screening?
Public criminal case records can help locate and verify court information, but they are not equivalent to a legally compliant consumer background report.
Employment, housing and other eligibility decisions can involve federal Fair Credit Reporting Act obligations and Ohio-specific laws. A background-screening company, employer or landlord may be required to follow authorization, notice and dispute procedures depending on the circumstances.
- Verify identity before associating a case with a person.
- Distinguish arrests, indictments, dismissed charges and convictions.
- Check whether a conviction was modified on appeal or subject to sealing.
- Obtain official documentation when an accurate disposition is important.
- Do not attempt to access sealed or restricted information without authorization.
