Rhode Island Criminal Court Records Search: Cases, Dockets & Court Documents
Need to find a criminal case in Rhode Island? Start with the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal, which provides access to public docket sheets, case activity and hearing information.
Use Smart Search for case records or Search Hearings for court schedules. If you need an actual filing, certified disposition or a Rhode Island criminal background check, there is a separate official process.
Official Rhode Island Judiciary, Attorney General and federal sources reviewed October 16, 2026.
Where to begin
How to Search Rhode Island Criminal Court Records
Use the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal to look for publicly accessible criminal case dockets. From its landing page, choose Smart Search for court records or Search Hearings to look up scheduled hearings over a date range.
The Judiciary describes its online register of actions as a chronological list of parties, filings, case events and related activity. Public users may remotely view available docket entries, but the Judiciary generally does not permit the public to remotely download the underlying electronic case documents. For those, use the appropriate courthouse or clerk’s office.

Step-by-Step: Find a Criminal Case in the Rhode Island Public Portal
The official landing page uses Smart Search and Search Hearings. The detailed search fields may change with Judiciary software updates, so use the labels displayed on the live official portal.
-
Open the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal.
Visit publicportal.courts.ri.gov/PublicPortal. The site requires JavaScript and cookies. If it fails to load, try a current browser and permit the site’s necessary cookies.
-
Select “Smart Search.”
This is the portal option labeled for searching court records. “Search Hearings” is the separate route for hearing schedules, not the main case-history search.
-
Enter the case number or party name.
Use a full, accurately copied case number whenever possible. If you only know a person’s name, enter the available name information and use any search refinements offered on the page.
-
Identify the relevant court.
Criminal misdemeanors are commonly handled in District Court. Felony proceedings belong primarily in Superior Court, although a felony may have an earlier District Court arraignment entry.
-
Open the matching case result.
Compare the name, court, case identifier, filing date and other public details. A name match alone is not enough to establish a person’s identity.
-
Read the register of actions.
Inspect the docket chronologically. Look for charges, appearances, motions, plea entries, orders, verdicts, sentencing and later activity.
-
Look for the final disposition.
A case may show a charge or pending event without a final judgment. Confirm whether the charge was dismissed, resolved by plea, tried, filed, or otherwise disposed of.
-
Ask the clerk if you need a document.
If you need the actual signed order, certified disposition, judgment, sentence or transcript, contact the clerk responsible for the case. The public portal’s remote docket view does not provide the same access as an authorized courthouse document request.
Which court has the criminal case?
Rhode Island Superior Court vs. District Court Criminal Records
Understanding Rhode Island’s court structure can prevent a frustrating search. The District Court handles many misdemeanor matters and initial felony appearances; the Superior Court has original jurisdiction in felony proceedings. Related docket entries can sometimes exist at more than one court level.
Misdemeanors and initial felony proceedings
Rhode Island District Court has original jurisdiction over misdemeanors carrying up to one year of imprisonment. Most felony cases are initially arraigned in District Court, where bail may be addressed before the case proceeds to Superior Court.
Practical search: Begin with District Court when looking for misdemeanor proceedings or early felony appearances.
District Court ↗Felony prosecutions and trial records
Rhode Island Superior Court has original jurisdiction over felony proceedings and hears both jury and nonjury matters. It also hears specified appeals, including trials de novo following District Court trials.
Practical search: For a felony judgment or sentence, identify the Superior Court case rather than relying solely on an earlier District Court arraignment.
Superior Court ↗What about the Traffic Tribunal and Family Court?
The Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal handles traffic matters within its jurisdiction, but not every traffic ticket is a criminal conviction. Family Court records, including juvenile matters, can involve special confidentiality rules. Do not assume that the absence of a case in the public criminal docket means a case never existed in another court system.

Rhode Island Criminal Background Checks: BCI vs. Public Court Records
The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) provides the state’s criminal-history background checks. A BCI result is not the same as a public court docket.
According to the Attorney General, the standard state BCI check uses name and date of birth and reflects Rhode Island records—not all federal or out-of-state criminal cases. The current state-report format focuses on fingerprint-supported arrests resulting in a conviction or equivalent, or pending prosecution, with specific disposition rules.

Public portal case lookup and eligible courthouse-terminal document viewing. Copies or certification may cost extra.
How to get your Rhode Island state BCI check in person
- Open the official BCI background-check page.
Use riag.ri.gov/i-want/get-background-check and select the state background-check instructions.
- Bring acceptable identification.
The Attorney General lists a valid state driver’s license, state ID or U.S. passport for an in-person state check.
- Visit the Cranston Customer Service Center.
Go to 4 Howard Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920. State checks are offered as a walk-in service; no appointment is required.
- Follow the on-site check-in process.
The office directs arrivals to join its virtual line by scanning the posted QR code or using the lobby kiosk. Follow the text-message instructions.
- Pay the published state-check fee.
The state BCI costs $5. Credit/debit card processing fees can apply. Verify payment instructions on the official page before visiting.
- Explain the purpose if necessary.
For a licensing, legal or employer-specific request, tell BCI staff why the check is needed because some authorized uses require different procedures.

Request a state BCI check by mail
Rhode Island also publishes a mail procedure. It requires a signed and notarized release, a copy of acceptable photo ID, a $5 check or money order payable to “BCI,” and a self-addressed stamped return envelope.
Send the completed packet to:
Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General4 Howard Avenue
Cranston, RI 02920
The Attorney General asks mail applicants to allow approximately 14 days for mailing and processing. Download the current release form from its official background-check page.
When a national fingerprint check is required
Some jobs and licenses require a fingerprint-based national background check. The Attorney General currently lists $45 for applicable national processing. The requesting employer or authorized agency may need to provide paperwork before fingerprints are taken.
A national check cannot simply be ordered as a public search of another person’s FBI history. Confirm your legal authority and the correct procedure with the organization requesting the check.

Reading a case correctly
What Does a Rhode Island Criminal Docket Show?
Rhode Island’s public register of actions organizes court activity chronologically. It can show events and filings without providing the full underlying documents to remote public users.
| Docket item | What it may tell you | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Case number | Identifies the court proceeding. | Use the complete identifier when contacting the clerk. |
| Arraignment | Initial formal court proceeding concerning a charge. | Does not establish guilt or final outcome. |
| Bail event or order | Court activity concerning release conditions. | Terms can change; read later orders. |
| Motion filed | A request or application submitted in the case. | Filing a motion does not mean the judge granted it. |
| Nolo contendere | A no-contest plea that can have significant criminal-record consequences. | Read the accepted plea, resulting disposition and judgment. |
| Not guilty filing / guilty filing | Rhode Island-specific court dispositions involving the filing of a case. | Do not equate these entries automatically with dismissal or acquittal; check court instructions and any applicable conditions. |
| Dismissal or acquittal | Specified charges were dismissed or resulted in acquittal. | Whether other counts remain and whether the final record has been corrected or sealed. |
| Sentence or judgment | Court’s disposition or imposed sentence. | Check all counts and subsequent changes. |
| Case closed | An administrative case status. | Closed does not tell you, by itself, whether the result was conviction, dismissal or another outcome. |
Public docket vs original documents
How to Obtain Certified Rhode Island Criminal Court Documents
The Judiciary distinguishes remote public docket access from courthouse document access. The public may review qualifying electronic documents on courthouse terminals during regular business hours, subject to sealing and confidentiality rules.
- Search for the case online.
Use Smart Search, write down the case number, court name and the relevant disposition or docket entry.
- Find the clerk responsible for that case.
A Providence/Bristol felony judgment typically belongs to Superior Court at Licht; a Providence misdemeanor may belong to District Court at Garrahy.
- Specify the required document.
Request the judgment, sentencing order, certified disposition, dismissal order, or other exact document. “Complete background check” is not a court-document type.
- Ask about access and charges.
Public electronic documents may be viewed without charge at available courthouse terminals. Printed or certified copies can have additional charges.
- Confirm the method of delivery.
Ask whether you can receive the document in person, by mail or by any authorized electronic procedure. Restrictions can apply.
- Keep the certified copy intact.
If the document is needed for legal, licensing or another formal purpose, ask the recipient whether they need an official seal or certification.
For a transcript of court proceedings, use the Judiciary’s separate transcript-request instructions; transcripts are not the same as ordinary docket entries.
Restricted and sealed records
Rhode Island Expungement, Sealing and Missing Criminal Cases
Some Rhode Island criminal court records are unavailable to the public because they have been sealed, expunged or otherwise restricted. The Judiciary identifies Title 12, Chapter 1.3 of the Rhode Island General Laws as an important source for expungement of qualifying criminal convictions, while §12-1-12 provides procedures concerning certain acquitted or exonerated cases.
The availability of relief depends on the charge, disposition, prior record, statutory eligibility and other factors. Do not assume that every conviction or dismissed charge will be automatically removed.
How the court describes the expungement process
- Find the court that handled the case.
Record the court, charge and case number. The motion is generally filed in the court where the relevant conviction or charge occurred.
- Open the official expungement resources.
The Judiciary provides District and Superior Court motion forms, including different felony and misdemeanor forms.
- Check whether relief is legally available.
Review the applicable statute and instructions or seek advice from a qualified Rhode Island attorney.
- File and provide required notice.
The Judiciary explains that a motion generally requires at least 10 days’ notice of the hearing to the Attorney General and the police department that charged the case.
- Follow the court’s decision and outstanding requirements.
If an order is granted, the Judiciary states that outstanding financial obligations must be paid or waived as required to complete the process.
- Deliver certified orders when directed.
The Judiciary explains that certified orders are prepared for the petitioner, BCI and the charging police department, with the petitioner responsible for distributing the agency copies.

Federal criminal cases prosecuted in the District of Rhode Island are searched through PACER, not the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal.

Why You Cannot Find a Rhode Island Criminal Court Record
| Problem | Likely explanation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Search will not load | Browser cookies, JavaScript, site compatibility or a temporary portal problem. | Use an updated browser, enable necessary cookies and return through the official Judiciary portal page. |
| Name search returns no cases | Wrong court, spelling variation, incomplete identifier, older record or restricted case. | Try the exact case number, check District and Superior Court and contact the clerk. |
| District Court shows a felony arraignment but no final sentence | The felony may have proceeded to Superior Court. | Search the corresponding Superior Court case or ask the Clerk about the transfer. |
| A docket is visible but its documents are not | Remote public access generally provides docket entries rather than underlying case documents. | Ask the Clerk about courthouse inspection or lawful copies. |
| A case predates online records | Older records may not be included in the portal, especially pre-1988 files. | Ask the Judicial Records Center or relevant court about archives. |
| BCI shows different information from a docket | BCI has different inclusion rules and may focus on conviction-equivalent or pending-prosecution entries. | Compare the final disposition and ask BCI about correction or record interpretation. |
| A previously visible case has disappeared | Possible sealing, expungement, access restriction or administrative change. | Do not assume the reason. Contact the court through an authorized channel. |
Older Rhode Island criminal case records
The Rhode Island Judicial Records Center maintains historic court materials. Its archives describe criminal records reaching back to the colonial period, and its records guidance recommends contacting the Center before visiting to verify whether the requested file is held there.

Responsible use
Criminal Dockets Are Not Proof of Guilt or a Consumer Background Report
A criminal charge, arrest, arraignment or pending prosecution is not the same as a conviction. Even a completed docket can require careful reading to understand nolo pleas, court filings, dismissals, acquittals and sentence conditions.
Rhode Island’s public case search is not designed to replace an authorized BCI, fingerprint check or consumer background report. Employment and housing screening may raise requirements under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and applicable Rhode Island law.
When a background report contains an inaccurate or legally restricted record, consult the issuing agency’s correction process or the applicable consumer-reporting dispute procedure.
