Indiana Odyssey / MyCase

How to Search Marion County Criminal Court Cases Online

Indiana’s MyCase system offers separate Case, Name and Attorney search tabs. You do not need a paid subscription or account to search ordinary non-confidential cases.

  1. Open the Indiana MyCase website.

Go to mycase.in.gov, the Indiana Judicial Branch’s public search portal.

  2. Choose a search method.

Select Case if you have a cause number, Name for a defendant-name search, or Attorney if you are searching by counsel.

  3. Enter the available identifiers.

The Case search accepts a case number, citation number or cross-reference number. Name searching uses a last name and can be refined using a first or middle name or date of birth.

  4. Limit the search to the proper court.

Use the Court filter to narrow results to Marion County or its courts. The exact options shown depend on the portal’s current court list.

  5. Open Advanced Search Options when needed.

Use the filing-date range or Open/Closed status filters. Begin broadly if you are uncertain of the case year.

  6. Review the search results.

Compare the case number, court, caption, case type and filing date. A similar defendant name alone is insufficient to establish identity.

  7. Open the chronological case summary.

The summary lists court events in date order. Look for charges, hearings, motions, dispositions, sentencing events and post-judgment activity.

  8. Check whether a document link is available.

Some court documents are available to the public online at no charge. Other filings can be viewed only by parties or may require a request to the Clerk’s Office.

  9. Verify the official outcome.

If you need to prove a conviction, acquittal, dismissal or sentence, obtain the applicable court record or a certified copy directly from the Marion County Clerk.

MyCase search limitation: A search can return no more than 1,000 results. If a common name creates too many matches, narrow by court or filing-date range rather than assuming the first result is correct.
04

Read the case identifier

Understanding Marion County Criminal Cause Numbers

An Indiana cause number contains identifiers for the county, court, filing year, case type and sequence. Recognizing these components helps confirm whether a search result belongs to Marion County.

Indianapolis court structure

Marion Superior Court Criminal Division and Other Local Courts

Marion County’s criminal cases are handled through Indiana’s trial-court structure, especially divisions of Marion Superior Court. The exact judge and division can change through administrative assignments, judicial rotation and reorganization.

Marion Superior Court — Criminal

Handles criminal prosecutions within its jurisdiction. MyCase may list a specific Marion Superior Court division, judge, cause number and case events.

Felony and misdemeanor matters may be assigned to particular court divisions. Use the court listed in the MyCase result rather than choosing a judge’s courtroom from an outdated directory.

Marion Circuit Court

A distinct Marion County court within Indiana’s judicial system. Not every case under a Marion County name belongs in the criminal division of the Superior Court.

Confirm the court code, case type and department before requesting records, sending a filing or visiting a courtroom.

Felony versus misdemeanor: a case labeled F6 in its cause number is not equivalent to a misdemeanor CM filing. In addition, an arrest does not necessarily produce a filed criminal case, and a filed criminal case does not mean a conviction occurred.

Understand what you found

How to Read a Marion County Criminal Docket

Indiana MyCase displays a chronological case summary (CCS). The entries show how the matter has progressed, but the meaning of an entry depends on the broader case context.

Docket termWhat it generally meansWhat to check
Initial HearingEarly appearance after a case beginsWhether later hearings, pleas or dismissals appear
Information / ChargingProsecutor’s filing of formal allegationsWhether counts were later amended or dismissed
Pretrial ConferenceProcedural court appearanceFuture trial, plea or motion dates
Plea AgreementAgreement submitted concerning proposed resolutionWhether the court accepted it and entered judgment
DismissedCharge or case dismissedWhether dismissal concerns one count or the entire case
Judgment / SentencingCourt determination and/or sentenceFinal judgment, sentence and any later modifications
Appeal / Post-ConvictionSubsequent review of an earlier rulingWhether a separate appellate or post-conviction case exists
Do not confuse a charge with a conviction. A charge is an allegation. A case can result in dismissal, acquittal, conviction, a deferred outcome or another disposition. Review the final entries and obtain certified proof when the outcome matters.
08

Additional online access

Why Some Marion County Court Documents Do Not Appear on MyCase

Indiana permits online access to many public court documents, but it does not display every filing. Older materials may not have been scanned, and some documents can be restricted even when the general case is visible.

Public MyCase access

Search non-confidential cases and open publicly available documents. Some filings are available at no cost.

Party Access to MyCase

Parties in eligible cases can create an Indiana Courts account and connect a case using an access code, potentially gaining access to additional documents in their own case.

Official party-access instructions →

Indiana’s party-access instructions indicate that the user may request up to ten access codes per day. Additional access is not unlimited: some restricted filings remain unavailable online, and being a case party does not guarantee access to every sealed or confidential record.

09

Separate agency, separate report

Marion County Court Records vs. Indiana State Police Criminal History

If the requester needs an Indiana criminal-history report rather than the records of one Marion County case, use Indiana State Police. The two systems answer different questions.

Indiana MyCase

Provides court-case information and public docket activity from participating courts.

  • Free public search
  • Case and party lookup
  • Chronological case summary
  • Selected public documents
  • Not a complete criminal-history check

Indiana State Police

Provides official criminal-history services, including the name-based Limited Criminal History and fingerprint-based report options.

  • Formal criminal-history service
  • Statewide repository information
  • Online fees may apply
  • Fingerprint-based options available
  • Report contents depend on request type

The ISP Limited Criminal History service is an Indiana-only, name-based report whose completeness depends on county participation. Current ISP guidance identifies results such as On File, Inconclusive and No Records Found. It recommends a fingerprint-based national check when a more comprehensive identity-confirmed search is required.

ISP fee distinction: The currently listed non-subscriber online Limited Criminal History charge is $16.32 per search, with a $15 subscriber rate. These are ISP background-check fees, not MyCase court-search fees. Confirm payment on the official ISP site.

Related but distinct records

Arrest Reports, Jail Records, Warrants and Federal Criminal Cases

Indianapolis Arrest and Police Reports

Arrest and investigative records are maintained by law-enforcement agencies, not automatically by the Clerk of Court. Use the City of Indianapolis public-record request system for the appropriate city agency.

City public-record request →

Jail and Custody Information

Custody and booking data should be verified through the responsible jail or sheriff rather than inferred from an open criminal case. A pending case does not prove that the defendant remains incarcerated.

Indianapolis agency directory →

Federal Criminal Cases

Federal prosecutions in Indianapolis are handled through the federal judiciary, including the Southern District of Indiana. PACER provides official federal case access.

Federal case search →

Warrants: MyCase may contain court events associated with warrant activity, but it is not a guaranteed real-time warrant status service. Do not treat an absence of an online entry as proof that no active warrant exists. Resolve urgent warrant questions through the appropriate court, law-enforcement agency or attorney.

12

Legal access and accuracy

Sealed Cases, Expungements and Responsible Use

Indiana court rules and state law govern which case records are publicly accessible. Certain juvenile, expunged, sealed or otherwise confidential cases and documents may not appear through MyCase.

Public-search limitations

  • Older electronic records may be incomplete.
  • Confidential filings may not be visible.
  • Expunged cases can disappear from public searches.
  • Some court documents require clerk assistance.

Consequential decisions

  • Charges are not proof of guilt.
  • Name matches may identify different people.
  • Use official dispositions to verify outcomes.
  • Employment or tenant screening may involve FCRA requirements.

Indiana’s expungement and sealing processes are governed by law, and record availability after a court order can differ depending on the type of case and order entered. For record-specific advice, consult a qualified Indiana attorney or the appropriate court.
