Where to Search Comal County Criminal Records Online
The fastest official starting point is Comal County Odyssey Public Access. The portal offers different record categories, so choose the one that matches your question instead of assuming one search includes everything.
Criminal Case Records
Look up filed criminal court cases, parties, case summaries and recorded case activity. Use case number or defendant name where supported.
Open Case Search ↗Jail Records
Search available jail information separately from court cases. Jail booking records do not prove conviction.
Open Jail Search ↗Jail Bond Records
Review the separate jail-bond category when the question concerns a bond record rather than the entire criminal court history.

How to Search Comal County Criminal Cases by Name or Case Number
Use the following process for a felony or misdemeanor court case. The wording of individual search fields may change, so follow the controls displayed on the live official portal.
-
Open the Comal County Judicial Record Search.
Go directly to public.co.comal.tx.us/default.aspx. This is the county-linked Odyssey Public Access application.
-
Select “Criminal Case Records.”
On the page that asks you to select a location, choose the criminal category. Avoid Probate or Civil/Family search unless you need a different kind of court file.
-
Use the full case number when available.
A precise case number is usually more reliable than a broad name search. Copy letters, digits, and other components accurately from the court paperwork.
-
Search by defendant name if the number is unknown.
Use the surname and given name fields provided by the portal. If no result appears, check spelling, legal name changes, aliases or other supported filters.
-
Match the correct court and case.
Compare the case number, filing date, court, name and other public information. A person with a common name may have multiple possible matches.
-
Review the case summary and events.
Look for the charge, filing date, arraignment, plea, scheduled hearings, orders, judgment or final disposition. Court events are not automatically findings of guilt.
-
Identify the proper record custodian.
If it is a District Court felony, contact the District Clerk. If it is a County Court at Law misdemeanor, contact the County Court at Law Clerk.
-
Request a certified disposition if needed.
The online summary is useful for research, but official proof of an outcome usually requires the appropriate certified court document.

Choose the county’s online, in-person or fax option.

Requests are handled in date order. The county publishes that they may require up to 10 business days.

The Jail Records Division publishes that pages 1–40 are free, additional pages cost 10 cents each, and larger requests may involve research or assembly charges. Restricted information may be redacted.
- Contact the correct originating agency if referred.
The Jail Records Division may hold material associated with other police or court agencies that it cannot release. Its instructions say the requester may need to contact the actual document holder.
Who Handles Arrest Reports in New Braunfels, Bulverde and Garden Ridge?
The county’s Public Information Office directs arrest reports, police records and accident-report requests to the law-enforcement agency that made the arrest or prepared the report. This matters because not every arrest in Comal County was made by the Sheriff’s Office.
| If the incident was handled by… | Start with… | Do not confuse it with… |
|---|---|---|
| Comal County Sheriff’s Office | Sheriff’s official open-records process | A certified criminal court disposition |
| New Braunfels Police Department | New Braunfels Police public-records procedure | The District Clerk’s felony court file |
| Bulverde Police Department | Bulverde Police or its designated municipal records office | A countywide court search |
| Garden Ridge Police Department | Garden Ridge’s police-records procedure | A County Court at Law misdemeanor file |
| Texas DPS / another municipality | The specific investigating or arresting agency | Automatically a Comal County Sheriff’s record |
If the report originated with an agency in a neighboring county or a city crossing county boundaries, use the actual agency and filing court—not simply the city name.

Texas DPS Criminal History Checks vs. Comal County Court Records
Comal County’s Odyssey search is not a substitute for the Texas Department of Public Safety’s statewide computerized criminal-history system.
Texas DPS maintains a public criminal-history name search and separate procedures for fingerprint-based personal record review. The public name search requires an account and purchased search credits.
Published price per search credit, with additional processing charges for certain purchases.
Names can be misleading
DPS warns that name-based matches may identify the wrong person or fail to identify the correct person.
Fingerprint method
DPS provides a personal fingerprint-based review process through authorized fingerprinting instructions.
How to Use the Texas DPS Name Search
- Open the official Texas DPS criminal-history search.
Use the Crime Records Division’s Criminal History Name Search.
- Read the Access and Dissemination Policy.
Choose the public access route, not a restricted system intended for authorized organizations.
- Create an account if required.
Follow the official sign-up instructions for the public search service.
- Purchase the necessary credits.
DPS currently publishes $1 per search credit, plus an applicable purchase transaction fee.
- Enter the correct identity details.
Use the legal first and last names, and available middle, maiden or birth-date information. DPS cautions against nicknames and incomplete search criteria.
- Examine possible matches cautiously.
DPS uses expanded name-matching logic. A result may involve someone with a similar-sounding or identical name.
- Use a fingerprint-based personal review when identity must be resolved.
If your own Texas history appears incorrect, follow DPS personal review and challenge instructions.

Justice of the Peace and Municipal Courts
Many Texas Class C misdemeanor cases are heard in Justice of the Peace or municipal courts rather than County Courts at Law.
If your record concerns a municipal citation in New Braunfels, Garden Ridge or another local municipality, identify the issuing court printed on the citation.
The county’s jail-records background-check description specifically excludes JP and municipal Class C misdemeanors.

How to Read a Comal County Criminal Case Disposition
Criminal court information may contain an arrest, filing, hearing, plea, deferred-adjudication status, conviction, dismissal or sentencing event. Those terms are not interchangeable.
| Case or docket term | What it means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest / booking | A law-enforcement custody or processing event. | Whether formal charges were filed and how they were resolved. |
| Information / indictment | A formal charging instrument. | Charges and subsequent proceedings; filing does not establish guilt. |
| Arraignment | A criminal court proceeding related to the charge and plea. | Later plea, trial, dismissal or sentence. |
| Deferred adjudication | A distinct Texas procedure involving court-ordered supervision without immediate adjudication of guilt in eligible cases. | Conditions, completion, final order and background-reporting implications. |
| Dismissed | A particular charge or case was dismissed. | Whether all counts were dismissed and whether an arrest history remains. |
| Judgment / sentence | Court’s formal disposition or sentence. | Exact offense, count, sentence and any later modification. |
| Closed | Administrative case status. | Do not infer conviction or innocence from this label alone. |
Common local search problems
Why You Cannot Find a Comal County Criminal Record
| Problem | Likely explanation | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| No criminal case found after an arrest | Charges may not yet have been formally filed or assigned a court case number. | Check jail records; for unfiled misdemeanor charges, the County Clerk directs inquiries to the Magistrate’s Office. |
| Jail booking appears but no final outcome | Jail records track detention, not necessarily prosecution and disposition. | Search Criminal Case Records or contact the appropriate court clerk. |
| Class C citation missing | The record may be held by a JP or municipal court. | Check the issuing court named on the ticket or citation. |
| Document image not available | The County Court at Law Clerk says Odyssey provides summaries and actions, not online images. | Request copies using the Clerk’s records form. |
| Signed court order not emailed | Comal County changed its electronic service procedure effective September 1, 2025. | Check re:SearchTX access requirements and contact the Clerk if necessary. |
| Common name returns multiple cases | The same name may belong to different people or multiple unrelated prosecutions. | Use case number, court, filing date and lawfully available identifying information. |
| A police report is unavailable from the county | The document may belong to a city police department or another reporting agency. | Submit the request to the agency that created the report. |
| Previously visible record missing | Possible expunction, nondisclosure, confidentiality, indexing changes or search error. | Contact the custodian through an authorized process; do not infer why the record is absent. |
Expunction and Nondisclosure in Texas
Texas provides distinct legal procedures for expunction and orders of nondisclosure. An expunction can clear eligible criminal records, while a nondisclosure order restricts public disclosure of qualifying records but may preserve access for authorized agencies.
Whether a Comal County case qualifies depends on the charge, outcome, sentence history, statutory criteria and other circumstances. These processes are not automatic merely because a charge was dismissed.
For current Texas expunction law, review Chapter 55A of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, which replaced the earlier Chapter 55 numbering effective January 1, 2025.

Can Comal County Criminal Records Be Used for Employment or Tenant Screening?
Public court information can help locate and understand a case, but it should not be mistaken for a certified nationwide background check or a legally compliant consumer report.
For employment, housing, licensing and similar decisions, federal and state rules can affect access, reporting, notices, dispute rights and use of criminal records. The Fair Credit Reporting Act applies in many circumstances when a consumer-reporting agency provides a background report.
