Official case search

How to Search Utah Criminal Cases on Xchange

Xchange contains eligible public case records entered through Utah’s Courts Information System (CORIS). Its records include district court felony and class A misdemeanor cases and many justice court misdemeanor and traffic cases.

  1. Open the official Xchange portal.

Visit xchange.utcourts.gov. Select guest payment, account login or registration as appropriate.

  2. Choose one-time use or a subscription.

The one-time option is best for occasional searches. Regular users may find a subscription more appropriate. Review the published charges before continuing.

  3. Search with a case number when known.

An exact case number is more reliable than a common name. If the number is unknown, use the available party-name fields.

  4. Try surname-first search tactics.

Utah Courts recommends starting with the last name and an asterisk, then adding a first name or other details to narrow the results.

  5. Filter by location or dates.

If you know the courthouse, county or citation location, use available filters. Date-range controls can reduce common-name matches.

  6. Review the results carefully.

Compare the county, court location, case type, case number, filing date and available defendant details.

  7. Open the case history.

The case-number link leads to expanded history. Xchange can show parties, charges, hearings, minute entries, filings and final outcomes.

  8. Check public document availability.

Use the Case History/Documents link to see whether a public PDF can be purchased. Some documents remain unavailable electronically.

  9. Verify any important finding with the clerk.

For a certified judgment, a missing disposition or a possible error, contact the court that maintains the record.

Each search can cost money. The Xchange Search button initiates a billable search under the present pricing structure. Use exact identifiers and narrow filters to avoid unnecessary repeated searches.

Upcoming Xchange changes: Utah Courts says a redesigned system is being rolled out in stages during October–December 2026. The planned late-December tier includes 50 free searches and 50 free document downloads per month. These announced allowances are future changes as of this article’s review date, not fees currently in effect.

Free personal case access

Utah MyCourtCase: View Your Own Criminal Docket for Free

Utah Courts’ MyCourtCase system is different from Xchange. It is primarily intended for people involved in a case. Eligible users can view case history, read papers, link cases and make payments without a service fee.

  1. Open the MyCourtCase instructions.

Use the Utah Judiciary’s official MyCourtCase website, not the similarly named Utah Department of Workforce Services benefits system.

  2. Create your account.

Prepare an email address, case number and government-issued identification. The court uses this information to verify eligibility.

  3. Follow the emailed registration instructions.

Check the spam folder if the message from Utah Courts is missing.

  4. Verify the correct court location.

Select the correct district or justice court. Utah Courts notes that certain third-district searches require selecting Salt Lake County.

  5. Open your case history.

Review case events, available filings and payment information.

  6. Link additional eligible cases when needed.

Use the MyProfile area and Add Case(s), then provide the case number and court location. The court may take several days to verify access.

What MyCourtCase can do

  • Display your case history
  • Show filed court papers
  • Handle eligible electronic filings
  • Link more than one case
  • Provide court-related notifications

What MyCourtCase is not

  • An unrestricted people-search service
  • A general background-check database
  • A replacement for an official certified judgment
  • A guarantee that every restricted record is accessible

Utah Courts also states that victims in qualifying criminal cases can create accounts to access permitted case documents and history. Availability still depends on case type and authorization.

Understand jurisdiction

Utah District Court vs. Justice Court Criminal Cases

Before searching by courthouse, determine the criminal charge classification. Utah assigns different criminal matters to district and justice courts.

General jurisdiction

District Court

Handles all felony cases and class A misdemeanor cases. Public case summaries can be accessed through Xchange, with available electronic district court filings offered for purchase.

Utah’s online public records have broad district court coverage from the late 1990s onward, but the exact completeness start date varies by location.

Limited jurisdiction

Justice Court

Handles most class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, local ordinance matters and traffic cases, subject to legal jurisdiction rules.

Justice courts began using Utah’s statewide CORIS system at different times. Older records and converted cases may have limited electronic detail.

Case typeUsual courtSearch recommendation
FelonyDistrict CourtStart with Xchange district court search
Class A misdemeanorDistrict CourtSearch the correct district court location
Class B or C misdemeanorJustice CourtSelect the relevant municipal or county justice court
Traffic infractionOften Justice CourtUse citation details and location filters
Federal criminal offenseU.S. District CourtUse PACER instead of state Xchange
Local example: A felony case filed in Salt Lake City belongs in a district court, while a class C traffic-related misdemeanor may appear in a justice court for the locality where it was filed. Searching only one court level may miss the other.

Interpret the results

How to Read a Utah Criminal Court Docket

Xchange provides both summary and extended case-history views. Search results may show case numbers, court location, filing dates, party details, case types and defendant birth dates where available.

Docket itemWhat it meansWhat to verify
Case NumberCourt’s case identifierUtah Xchange guidance says the first two digits identify the filing year
Filing DateDate the case was filedMay differ from arrest or offense date
ChargesAlleged offenses in the criminal caseCharges are not proof of conviction
ProceedingsChronological court eventsLook for later orders and dispositions
JudgmentCourt’s determinationWhether it concerns all counts or only selected charges
SentencePenalties or obligations orderedLater amendments, appeals and compliance entries
Case DocumentFiling or order linked from XchangePublic availability, document fee and official certification

Utah Courts’ Xchange help page explains that extended criminal case histories can contain defendant details, prosecutor and law-enforcement information, violation dates and chronological proceedings. A court document may provide more context than a brief docket entry.

Official record requests

How to Obtain Certified Utah Criminal Court Records

An Xchange screen or PDF is not always sufficient for an official purpose. If an employer, attorney, immigration authority, licensing board or other recipient requires a certified disposition, contact the clerk of the court where the criminal case was filed.

Prepare before contacting the clerk

  • Full case number
  • District or justice court name
  • Defendant’s legal name
  • Approximate filing year
  • Document or judgment requested
  • Whether certification is needed

Ask about

  • Public inspection procedures
  • Certified judgment or disposition
  • Copy and certification charges
  • Older files not on Xchange
  • Electronic versus in-person delivery
  • Restricted document access

Utah Courts identifies district and justice court clerks as the official record keepers. If you believe Xchange contains inaccurate information, contact the clerk where the case was filed rather than assuming the online service can independently amend the record.

Not a court docket

Utah BCI Criminal History Checks vs. Court Records

The Utah Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) manages Utah criminal-history records. A BCI request is different from viewing a district or justice court docket.

Xchange

Used for available public cases from Utah courts. It can help determine whether a criminal case was filed and what the court recorded.

Utah Courts Xchange →

BCI Right of Access

Used by an individual to obtain a copy of their own Utah criminal-history record. BCI does not offer unrestricted public access to other people’s complete criminal histories.

BCI personal-record procedure →
Current BCI fee: Utah BCI lists $20 for a personal Utah criminal-history Right of Access request. A record-challenge request also has a listed $20 fee under the changes effective July 1, 2025.

Utah BCI location: 4315 South 2700 West, Suite 1300, Taylorsville, UT 84129. Phone: (801) 965-4445. The published office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding state holidays.

Applicants may request their own Utah history in person or by mail according to BCI instructions, including identity verification. BCI provides additional authorization and third-party release forms when applicable.

Historical record coverage

How Far Back Do Utah Online Criminal Court Records Go?

Xchange coverage does not start on the same date for every court. Utah Courts says many district courts joined CORIS during the 1990s, while some justice courts joined later. Cases filed before a court’s start date may be available with incomplete information.

District court locationPublished CORIS startSearch implication
Salt Lake CityDecember 8, 1997Older cases may need clerk research
ProvoApril 27, 1998Check filing date if older matter missing
OgdenOctober 14, 1997Pre-CORIS data may be partial
St. GeorgeMarch 17, 1997Verify archived cases with the clerk
LoganAugust 18, 1997Historical electronic details may vary
FarmingtonMay 26, 1998Use the clerk for older or incomplete entries

The official coverage page also explains that some closed district court data was merged into other court locations. Consequently, searching only the name of a former courthouse may not locate the electronic record.

Records not open to the public

Sealed, Expunged and Juvenile Criminal Cases in Utah

Xchange includes public cases only. Cases protected by sealing, expungement or other confidentiality rules may not appear. Juvenile delinquency and most protected juvenile matters are not part of the ordinary public district/justice court Xchange records.

What happens after expungement?

Utah Courts states that expunged criminal cases are removed from public Xchange results after the expungement order is entered.

In some circumstances, a person can see their own expunged case in MyCourtCase under a generic “Case Expunged” label.

Can you get an expungement order?

Utah Courts describes specific procedures for requesting records, including a 28-day certified-copy window in certain situations and options for automatically expunged cases.

Access remains dependent on the person’s eligibility and governing law.

No result does not prove no case ever existed. A record may be expunged, confidential, filed in another court, predating digital coverage or absent because of a spelling or indexing issue.

For technical Xchange problems, Utah Courts lists xchange@utcourts.gov. For errors in actual case information, use the local court clerk rather than the software support address.

13

Using records responsibly

Utah Criminal Dockets Are Not Proof of Guilt

An arrest, citation, criminal charge or hearing entry is not a criminal conviction. Read the final disposition, including whether the charge was dismissed, a person was acquitted, a plea was accepted or a judgment was entered.

For employment, tenant screening or licensing, separate federal and state restrictions may govern use of criminal records. A paid Xchange case summary should not be represented as an identity-verified criminal-history report.

Identity verification: Similar names, shared birth years and neighboring counties can produce different records. Never assume that one name match establishes the identity of the subject.
