How to Search Hawaii Criminal Court Records by Name or Case Number
The Hawaii State Judiciary operates eCourt Kōkua through its Judiciary Information Management System (JIMS). The public website provides case searches for qualifying criminal cases and other court proceedings.
The Judiciary refreshed the eCourt Kōkua interface in May 2026. Its main public search functions remained available, although page layouts and navigation labels may have changed.
Hawaii State Judiciary — eCourt Kōkua
Use the official Judiciary landing page to open the current search application, review record coverage, understand case-number formats and purchase eligible public documents.
Step-by-step: searching Hawaii criminal records
-
Open the official eCourt Kōkua page
Follow the Judiciary’s current entry link to the case-search application. Read and accept the displayed public-access disclaimer.
-
Select the appropriate search method
Use Party Search when you know the defendant’s name, Case Search when you have a case number, or Upcoming Court Hearings Search when you need scheduling information.
-
Enter the name or case identifier
Provide the exact name as it appears in court documents, or enter the case number using the required format. Older cases may require number conversion.
-
Choose the appropriate court or case category
Look for Circuit Court felony proceedings, District Court misdemeanor matters, or another relevant criminal case category.
-
Review matching records carefully
Confirm the defendant’s identity, court, filing date, case number and publicly available case details. A matching name alone does not establish that you have found the correct person.
-
Open the docket or case history
Review charges, hearings, court orders, pleas, judgments, sentencing entries or other publicly displayed events.
-
Look for available PDF documents
If a PDF icon appears next to an entry, the corresponding public document may be available to purchase and download.
-
Confirm the official result when necessary
For a certified judgment, official disposition or older case document, contact the courthouse maintaining the original record.
Is eCourt Kōkua free?
Yes, basic court case information can be viewed for free. However, obtaining copies of underlying documents may involve a charge.
Publicly available document PDFs cost $3 for documents up to 30 pages, with an additional $0.10 for each page after the first 30. The Judiciary also offers paid document subscriptions.
Understanding Hawaii criminal jurisdiction
Hawaii Circuit Court vs. District Court Criminal Records
The court that handles the case depends on the classification of the offense and the applicable procedural rules.
Circuit Court
Circuit Courts have exclusive jurisdiction over felony criminal cases and conduct jury trials.
Use for: Felony indictments, criminal jury trials, felony judgments, sentencing and other proceedings within Circuit Court jurisdiction.
District Court
District Courts generally handle criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment of no more than one year, traffic offenses and violations. They also conduct probable-cause proceedings in felony matters.
Use for: Many misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor prosecutions, criminal traffic cases and certain preliminary felony proceedings.
Family Court
Family Courts handle matters assigned by statute, including juvenile proceedings and qualifying adult criminal matters.
Use for: Relevant adult Family Court criminal cases where public access is permitted. Juvenile information is subject to special confidentiality rules.
Why one criminal case can involve two courts
A felony case may involve an initial District Court appearance or probable-cause proceeding before moving to Circuit Court. In that situation, researching only the District Court docket may not reveal the later trial, plea or sentence.
Similarly, a misdemeanor case that proceeds to a jury trial may be transferred to Circuit Court under applicable procedures.

Hawaii Criminal Records by Island and Judicial Circuit
Hawaii has four current judicial circuits: First, Second, Third and Fifth. There is no operating Fourth Judicial Circuit; it was merged into the Third Circuit in 1943.
First Circuit — Oʻahu and Honolulu
The First Circuit includes Oʻahu and certain other islands not assigned to another circuit. Honolulu felony cases are handled through the relevant Circuit Court, while District Court facilities handle criminal cases within their jurisdiction.

Other District Court locations on Oʻahu include Pearl City, Kāneʻohe, Wahiawā and Waiʻanae. Use the actual court identified in the case docket or hearing notice.
Honolulu records tip: If a case includes a District Court criminal proceeding and later Circuit Court felony charges, request the final felony disposition from the First Circuit Court’s Legal Documents Branch.
Second Circuit — Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi
The Second Circuit serves Maui and neighboring islands in the circuit, including Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi. Public criminal case information is searchable through statewide eCourt Kōkua.
Second Circuit Court — Wailuku
Hoapili Hale
2145 Main Street
Wailuku, Maui, HI 96793
Legal Documents Branch: 808-244-2969
District Court cases may originate in Wailuku, Lahaina, Molokaʻi or Lānaʻi divisions. For official documents, contact the court holding the case file rather than assuming every Maui County proceeding is stored at the same courthouse.
The Judiciary provides a Second Circuit court records request form, listed as 2D-P-332, for eligible access and copying requests.
Third Circuit — Hawaiʻi Island, Hilo and Kona
The Third Circuit covers the Island of Hawaiʻi. Unlike some circuits, it has important court facilities in both Hilo and Kona.
Kona — Keahuolū Courthouse
74-5451 Kamakaʻeha Avenue
Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
Legal Documents Branch: 808-322-8750
When searching a Hilo or Kona criminal matter, use eCourt Kōkua to identify the case number and filing location before contacting either records office.
The judiciary also lists a South Kohala District Court location at the Waimea Civic Center Park in Kamuela for matters assigned to that division.
Fifth Circuit — Kauaʻi and Niʻihau
The Fifth Circuit serves Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. Circuit Court felony cases and District Court criminal cases are searchable through the applicable public portions of eCourt Kōkua.
Fifth Circuit Court — Līhuʻe

Historic records and case-number conversion
How to Find Older Hawaii Criminal Court Records
Hawaii has important online case-coverage limits. Older cases may exist in court archives even when eCourt Kōkua returns no search result.
| Case category | Published online limitation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic | Case information before November 1995 not included | Contact the relevant court for older records |
| District Court criminal | Case information before August 2012 not included | Ask the District Court Clerk about archived records |
| Appellate cases | Online case information before September 2010 not included | Contact the appellate court records office |
| Sealed or confidential cases | Not available through public eCourt Kōkua | Follow the court’s lawful access requirements |
| Public docket entry without PDF icon | Document is not available for online purchase | Request it from the filing courthouse if publicly accessible |
Hawaii’s older criminal case-number format
Some historic cases were migrated from earlier systems. Their older numbers may need to be converted to the current JIMS identifier before a case-number search will work.
The Judiciary explains that migrated numbers can require a circuit prefix, case-type identifier and leading zeros, producing a 12-character search value.
| Example | Legacy number | Search format |
|---|---|---|
| First Circuit criminal case | CR-15-1-5678 |
1PC151005678 |
| Second Circuit Family Court criminal example | FCCR-15-1-1234 |
2FC151001234 |
| Third Circuit criminal case | 3PC-15-1-123 |
3PC151000123 |
These are illustrative conversions published by the Judiciary, not actual records being recommended for background searches.
Newer criminal case numbers
For criminal cases created starting January 23, 2017, the current system supports a hyphenated case ID format incorporating the circuit, case type, year and sequence number.
For example, the Judiciary gives 1CPC-17-0000001 as a valid format and explains that the shortened form 1CPC-17-1 may also be accepted.

How to Download or Request Hawaii Criminal Court Documents
eCourt Kōkua provides public docket information at no charge, but many filed documents require purchase.
The Judiciary’s record-access page explains that available public documents may be offered as regular copies with a file stamp or certified copies with the applicable electronic certification.
Download an eligible eCourt Kōkua document
-
Find the criminal case
Search by party name or case number using the official statewide court portal.
-
Open the case’s Dockets tab
Look through the available entries for the specific document you need.
-
Look for the PDF icon
If the PDF icon is not displayed, that document is not available for purchase through the online portal.
-
Choose the appropriate copy option
Review the available regular or certified copy option and whether it meets the requirements of the receiving organization.
-
Review the price before paying
The Judiciary publishes a $3 base charge for documents containing up to 30 pages, plus $0.10 per page beyond that.
-
Purchase and retrieve the document
Follow the portal’s payment and retrieval instructions. Payments made through eCourt Kōkua are nonrefundable.
Request records from the courthouse
If the document is not available online, the Judiciary offers three routes: viewing available records at a courthouse, ordering a paper copy there or submitting a written court-record request.
Prepare the following details before contacting the Clerk:
- Full case number
- Name of the party or defendant
- Judicial circuit and court type
- Document title or docket entry you need
- Whether a certified copy is required
- Your return contact information
For Oʻahu, the Judiciary provides First Circuit-specific request forms. For Maui, Hawaiʻi Island and Kauaʻi, it provides Neighbor Island court-record request forms and courthouse contacts.

Hawaii eCrim Criminal History Search: Adult Conviction Records
Hawaii’s Adult Criminal Conviction Information service, known as eCrim, is operated through the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center within the Department of the Attorney General.
eCrim searches publicly releasable adult criminal conviction information. It is not a database of all arrests, all pending cases, juvenile records or all federal and out-of-state convictions.
Official Hawaii eCrim Website
The service provides online name-based conviction-history checks. A resulting record may be ordered through its certified-record process for an additional charge.
How to search Hawaii adult conviction information
-
Open the official eCrim service
Use the Hawaii government-supported Adult Criminal Conviction Information website.
-
Review the record coverage
Understand that the ordinary public name check concerns Hawaii adult convictions and excludes public disclosure of confidential pending or nonconviction arrest information.
-
Enter the required search information
Provide the correct legal name and additional identifying details requested by the application. Avoid guessing personal information.
-
Pay the name-search fee
HCJDC publishes a $5 charge for each online name search.
-
Review the search response
Determine whether the system found publicly releasable adult conviction information matching the search criteria.
-
Purchase a record if needed
HCJDC lists $12 for each resulting certified record through eCrim. The report is delivered electronically after payment according to its current procedure.
-
Confirm whether the recipient accepts an online record
Some organizations require an HCJDC-issued document with the agency’s embossed seal rather than the online printout. Verify the required format before purchasing.
Why eCrim and eCourt Kōkua may show different information
The two government systems serve different purposes.
eCourt Kōkua
Contains publicly accessible court case information, including eligible pending and completed proceedings.
The docket may show criminal charges, hearings, dismissals, pleas, judgments and other proceedings.
eCrim
Provides adult conviction-history information that is publicly releasable under Hawaii law.
Pending arrests, nonconviction arrests and other confidential criminal-history entries are excluded from the general public report.
Verified public-record charges
How Much Does a Hawaii Criminal Records Search Cost?
Hawaii’s record-access fees differ depending on whether you want a court docket, a certified document, a state conviction-history search or your own fingerprint-based history.

| eCourt Kōkua basic case lookup | Free | Public case and docket information |
| eCourt public document, first 30 pages | $3 per document | Additional charge for documents over 30 pages |
| eCourt additional document pages | $0.10 per page after 30 pages | Applies beyond the base 30 pages |
| eCourt document subscription | $125 quarterly / $500 annually | For eligible public documents; nonrefundable |
| eCrim online name search | $5 | Search charge per name |
| eCrim resulting certified record | $12 | Separate record charge |
| HCJDC public-access site printout | $25 | In-person access at designated sites |
| HCJDC staff name-based check | $30 | In-office or mail processing |
| HCJDC additional document certification | $20 | Separate agency certification option |
| HCJDC fingerprint-based state check | $55 in office / $35 by mail | Additional fingerprint-collection fees may apply to mail requests |
| Personal Access and Review | $55 in office / $35 by mail | Fingerprint-based personal history review |
HCJDC warns that in-office credit, debit and Apple Pay payments incur a 3% nonrefundable service fee, and it does not accept cash for those services.
Police records are not the same as court records
How to Request Hawaii Arrest Records and Police Reports
A particular arrest report, incident report or police investigation file is generally maintained by the agency that created it.
The Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center does not make all arrest reports publicly available. It explains that arrests which resulted in convictions are generally public criminal-history information, while pending and nonconviction arrests are confidential in the ordinary public criminal-history process.
If you need an incident report, identify the police department that handled the incident and ask about its applicable report-release procedure.
Hawaii police departments and criminal-history public access sites
HCJDC publishes a list of designated public-access locations where adult conviction-history information may be requested in person. These locations can also help identify the appropriate local police agency, but an HCJDC public-access printout is not the same as obtaining an incident report.
| Island or location | HCJDC-listed public access location | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Honolulu, Oʻahu | Honolulu Police Department, 801 S. Beretania Street | 808-529-3191 |
| Hilo, Hawaiʻi Island | Hawaii Police Department, 349 Kapiʻolani Street | 808-961-2233 |
| Kona, Hawaiʻi Island | Kona Police Station, 74-5221 Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway | 808-326-4646, ext. 286 |
| Maui | Maui Police Department, 55 Mahalani Street, Wailuku | 808-244-6345 |
| Kauaʻi | Kauaʻi Police Department, 3990 Kaʻana Street, Līhuʻe | 808-241-1661 |
HCJDC lists a $25 charge for designated public-access conviction-history printouts. If instead you are seeking an arrest narrative, crash report, incident report or police investigative record, confirm the police department’s separate disclosure and fee requirements.

How to Request Your Own Complete Hawaii Arrest Record
Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center offers an Access and Review process for individuals who want to inspect their own full Hawaii arrest history and check it for errors.
This process is fingerprint-based and intended for personal review. It is not an unrestricted method for obtaining another person’s confidential criminal-history records.
HCJDC — Access and Review
The agency offers both an in-office fingerprint appointment and a mail-in procedure using fingerprints collected through an appropriate provider.

Hawaii Criminal Record Expungement and the 2025 Court-Record Update
Hawaii provides expungement of qualifying adult criminal-history records under Hawaii Revised Statutes § 831-3.2.
Many nonconviction arrests may be eligible, subject to statutory exceptions and applicable waiting periods. Certain narrowly defined conviction records may also qualify for expungement after the appropriate court order.
What changed on July 1, 2025?
HCJDC explains that, effective July 1, 2025, it automatically transmits granted expungement orders to the Judiciary for consideration of removing or sealing the related case information in the court’s publicly accessible electronic database.
People receiving expungement orders after this effective date generally no longer need to make a separate initial request to transmit the order to the Judiciary.
However, expungement orders issued before July 1, 2025 still require individuals to contact the Judiciary directly about the related electronic court information.
Nonconviction expungement
Qualifying arrest information can be removed from the statewide criminal-history repository and the arresting agency, subject to statutory exceptions.
A dismissal alone does not guarantee that every court record automatically disappears.
Selected conviction expungement
Only specified conviction categories qualify for the separate conviction-expungement provisions. A court order is required, and the relief may not remove records maintained by every agency.
Hawaii HCJDC expungement charges
| Expungement service | Published charge |
|---|---|
| First application | $35 |
| Second or subsequent application | $50 |
| Nonrefundable processing component | $10 included in application fee |
| Duplicate expungement certificate | $20 |
HCJDC states that the expungement process takes up to 120 days and does not offer expedited processing.

What Does a Hawaii Criminal Court Record Actually Prove?
A public record may show a complaint, arrest-related charge, court appearance, plea, dismissal, conviction or sentence. These events have different legal meanings.
Not proof of guilt
- Arrest
- Police investigation
- Criminal complaint
- Initial appearance
- Probable-cause hearing
- Pending criminal charge
Outcomes requiring review
- Dismissal
- Acquittal
- Deferred acceptance of plea
- Guilty or no-contest plea
- Conviction
- Sentence
- Appeal or expungement order
A charge might be dismissed, a conviction might be modified on appeal, or an arrest record might later qualify for expungement. For a high-stakes purpose, obtain the final disposition from the actual court.
Employment, housing and professional licensing decisions may be subject to consumer reporting, privacy and antidiscrimination laws. A public case-search result is not automatically a legally compliant background report.

Hawaii Criminal Records Search FAQs
1. How do I search Hawaii criminal records online?
For criminal court cases, use the Hawaii State Judiciary’s eCourt Kōkua service. It provides free basic public case information from qualifying District, Circuit, Family Court adult criminal and appellate cases. For a public adult conviction-history search, use HCJDC’s separate eCrim service.
2. Is the Hawaii criminal court records search free?
Yes. Basic public case and docket information in eCourt Kōkua is free. Available full court documents generally cost $3 for up to 30 pages plus $0.10 per additional page. Some courthouse documents may also be viewed without a fee at public-access terminals.
3. How much does Hawaii eCrim cost?
The Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center lists $5 per online name search and $12 for each resulting certified record ordered through eCrim. This is separate from eCourt Kōkua’s public court case lookup.
4. Can I search Hawaii criminal records by a person’s name?
Yes. eCourt Kōkua provides a Party Search for public case information, and eCrim provides paid name-based adult conviction-history checks. Names alone do not conclusively establish identity, so verify the correct person before relying on a result.
5. Where can I search Hawaii felony criminal cases?
Hawaii Circuit Courts have exclusive jurisdiction over felony criminal trials. Use eCourt Kōkua to search public felony cases, then contact the Circuit Court’s Legal Documents Branch if you need certified judgments or filings not available online.
6. How do I search criminal court records from Honolulu, Maui, Hilo or Kauai?
Use eCourt Kōkua statewide. Honolulu belongs to the First Circuit, Maui County to the Second, Hawaii Island to the Third, and Kauai to the Fifth. Request unavailable public documents from the court maintaining the original case.
7. Why can’t I find a Hawaii criminal case from before 2012?
The Judiciary states that District Court criminal case information before August 2012 is not included in eCourt Kōkua. Contact the relevant District Court Clerk for older records. Other court categories have different historical coverage rules.
8. Can I find all Hawaii arrest records through eCrim?
No. Public eCrim records concern adult criminal convictions. HCJDC explains that pending and nonconviction arrest information is confidential in the ordinary public criminal-history system. Individuals may request their own full arrest-history review through a separate fingerprint-based process.
9. How do I request a certified Hawaii criminal court judgment?
Find the exact criminal case in eCourt Kōkua, identify the judgment or disposition, and check whether an eligible certified document is available through the portal. Otherwise, use the official courthouse request procedure for the circuit handling the case.
10. Can I see my own full Hawaii criminal history?
Yes. HCJDC provides fingerprint-based Access and Review for an individual’s own Hawaii arrest history. Its published service fees are $55 in office and $35 by mail, with any applicable outside fingerprint-collection charges paid separately.
11. How do I search Hawaii prison or inmate records?
Use Hawaii SAVIN through the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation or VINELink for available custody and parole-status information. The service is free but is not a complete court criminal-history search.
12. Do Hawaii expungements remove criminal court records online?
For expungement orders issued on or after July 1, 2025, HCJDC automatically transmits the order to the Judiciary for consideration of the related electronic court information. For orders issued before that date, HCJDC instructs individuals to contact the Judiciary directly. The exact legal effect depends on the type of expungement and applicable order.
