Which Dallas Courts Handle Felony and Misdemeanor Cases?
The kind of offense determines which Dallas court maintains the criminal case.
Dallas County felony courts
The District Clerk maintains the official records of Dallas County’s felony criminal courts.
Felony cases may involve indictment, arraignment, motions, pleas, trial, sentencing and postjudgment proceedings.
District Clerk records can include the charging instrument, judgment, sentencing documents and publicly available filed orders.
Dallas County misdemeanor courts
The County Clerk’s Criminal Courts Division states that Dallas County has 11 county criminal courts hearing Class A and Class B misdemeanors, along with two criminal courts of appeals handling qualifying lower-court appeals.
Under Texas law, Class A misdemeanors generally carry a maximum punishment of one year in county jail and a fine of up to $4,000. Class B misdemeanors generally carry up to 180 days in county jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
Class C misdemeanors
Class C offenses are generally fine-only cases handled through Justice of the Peace Courts or Municipal Courts, depending on the offense and jurisdiction.
They will not necessarily appear in the same county felony and misdemeanor criminal court search.
Example: An arrest in the City of Dallas
A person arrested on a felony charge may first appear before a magistrate and later have a felony case filed in District Court. The jail maintains custody records, while the District Clerk maintains the felony court case.
A person cited for a fine-only municipal violation may instead have a matter in Dallas Municipal Court. Searching the County Criminal Courts alone may not locate that citation.

Online misdemeanor case records from 2011 onward
The County Clerk states that available misdemeanor documents filed from 2011 to the present can be accessed through the Dallas County Courts Portal.
Plain online documents are not necessarily certified copies.
What about misdemeanor records before 2011?
The County Clerk’s Criminal Courts Division states that cases before 2011 are maintained in offsite archival storage and may take up to 72 hours to retrieve.
However, the separate Central Records Division announced a temporary reduction in services in April 2026. Its current notice should be checked before relying on a normal archival turnaround time.
Important 2026 Central Records service disruption
Effective April 6, 2026: Dallas County’s Central Records Division announced a temporary service change during its move to a new facility.
Its published notice states that email requests are not being accepted or processed, and phone calls or follow-up inquiries are unavailable during the transition.
For criminal records, it currently directs users to:
- Online access for records from 2011 onward.
- In-person certified-copy service at the Frank Crowley Courts Building.
- In-person certified-copy service at the George L. Allen, Sr. Courts Building.
Older County Clerk pages still describe email requests. Follow the newer temporary notice while it remains posted.

Where should you go for a certified misdemeanor disposition?
Under the current notice, the county identifies two in-person options:
Frank Crowley Courts Building
133 N. Riverfront Boulevard
Dallas, TX 75207
Use the Criminal Courts or County Clerk service counters as directed.
George Allen Courts Building
600 Commerce Street
Dallas, TX 75202
Use the designated County Clerk certified-copy service.
For a case prior to 2011, review the temporary notice before visiting because historical retrieval service may be restricted during the move.
Certified judgments, dismissals and court copies
How to Obtain Certified Dallas Criminal Court Records
A public court docket or online document is not always sufficient when an agency requests a certified criminal record.
A certified record is issued by the appropriate Clerk and authenticated using the office’s official certification procedure.
Documents commonly requested
- Final judgment of conviction
- Order dismissing criminal charges
- Sentencing judgment
- Disposition of a misdemeanor case
- Order relating to community supervision
- Public plea-related filings
- Specific criminal court orders
Step-by-step certified copy request
-
Determine whether the case is a felony or misdemeanor
Review the online case type and court assignment.
-
Find the exact case number
Use the Dallas Courts Portal or Criminal Background Search.
-
Identify the correct records custodian
Use the District Clerk for felony records and the County Clerk for misdemeanor records.
-
Request the specific document
For example, identify the final judgment or order of dismissal instead of requesting every document without a reason.
-
Confirm whether a certified copy is required
Certification adds to the copying charge. If the receiving agency requires exemplification, request that separately.
-
Check current access procedures
For felony copies, contact the District Clerk’s Criminal Records Desk. For misdemeanor certified copies, follow the County Clerk’s current in-person service notice.
-
Confirm total fees and payment instructions
Different offices may have different acceptable payment methods. Do not assume all county services accept personal checks or payment over the phone.
-
Submit and obtain the document
Keep the case number and payment receipt until the certified copy is delivered.
Example: Requesting proof a Dallas felony charge was dismissed
First, locate the criminal case in the county’s case-history search and confirm the assigned Criminal District Court.
Next, identify the docket entry showing the dismissal and request a certified dismissal order from the District Clerk’s Felony Records Desk.
A booking report or online case summary may describe the case, but the certified dismissal order is better evidence of the judicial action when an agency specifically requests official proof.
County Clerk and District Clerk records costs

City citations and lower-level criminal matters
Dallas Municipal Court Citation and Criminal Docket Search

These cases should not automatically be searched through the County Criminal Courts system.

Open the Municipal Court citation page
Use the City of Dallas government’s official court website.
-
Enter the citation number
The City provides examples such as

Why is a new Dallas citation missing?

If the citation is not yet available, the City explains that defendants can use the court’s approved mail or in-person procedures.
What about Irving, Garland or Grand Prairie?
Those cities have separate municipal court systems for their qualifying city cases.
Do not assume that an Irving or Garland municipal citation will appear in the City of Dallas Municipal Court search merely because the city is located within Dallas County.
Use the court printed on the citation or contact the original issuing municipality.
Sheriff inmate lookup and booking records
Dallas County Jail Inmate Search and Booking Information
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office operates the county jail system and provides an official Jail Lookup service.

Is the Lew Sterrett Justice Center the same as the Criminal District Court?
No. The Lew Sterrett Justice Center is associated with county detention and magistration functions.
The Criminal District Courts and District Clerk maintain the legal proceedings and case records associated with felony prosecutions.
One criminal incident can therefore generate a booking record, magistration record and separate felony court case.
What if someone was transferred to a Texas state prison?
Use the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) offender search when the person is under state correctional authority rather than in Dallas County Jail.

This is different from Dallas County’s own felony and misdemeanor court case-history search.
How to use Texas DPS criminal history search
-
Open the Texas DPS Criminal History website
Use the official Crime Records Division portal.
-
Create a secure account
The DPS public search requires account registration.

Texas DPS lists each name-based criminal-history search credit at $1.

Enter the first and last name
Additional information, such as date of birth or middle name, can improve matching.
-
Review the possible matches
The system may expand its search to name variations and display likely matches.
-
Confirm the identity before relying on a result
DPS cautions that name-based searches can produce matches requiring further verification.
Texas DPS criminal history search fees
The published charge is $1 per search credit. Credit-card payments also have processing fees under DPS’s current payment schedule.
DPS states that the initial search consumes one credit even if the system performs additional internal matching searches.
How to obtain your own fingerprint-based criminal history
If you need to verify whether a name-based result belongs to you or dispute an inaccurate criminal-history match, Texas DPS provides a personal fingerprint-based review process.
Contact the DPS Crime Records Division or follow its approved fingerprinting instructions.
Sealing and clearing eligible criminal records
Dallas Criminal Court Records: Expunction and Nondisclosure
Some Texas criminal records may qualify for expunction or an order of nondisclosure, depending on the specific case circumstances.
These are separate legal remedies.
Removing Qualifying Arrest Records
Texas expunction law can permit qualifying criminal arrest and court records to be removed or handled according to the final expunction order.
Eligibility may arise from certain acquittals, dismissals, arrests without prosecution and other specified circumstances.
Restricting Public Disclosure
An order of nondisclosure generally limits public access to qualifying criminal-history information while allowing access to certain legally authorized agencies.
It does not mean every underlying record is destroyed.
Texas Chapter 55A expunction law
Current Texas expunction provisions are codified primarily in Chapter 55A of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, effective January 1, 2025.
The statute establishes eligibility rules and procedures for different categories of expunction.
Why might a Dallas criminal case be absent from public search?
Possible explanations include expunction, nondisclosure restrictions, another form of confidentiality, historical digitization limits or incorrect search details.
Do not treat a missing online result as proof that an individual has no criminal history.
