Maricopa Criminal Records Search: Cases, Court Dockets & Public Records

Looking for a criminal case in Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Glendale, Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert, Surprise or elsewhere in Maricopa County? Start with the court that handled the case—not a commercial people-search database.

Maricopa County has separate Superior Court, Justice Court and Municipal Court systems. This guide shows exactly where to search, how to read results, obtain certified records and avoid confusing an arrest with a conviction.

How to Find Maricopa County Criminal Records

Start with the Maricopa County Superior Court criminal docket if you are searching for a felony prosecution. For qualifying misdemeanors or preliminary felony proceedings, check the Justice Courts. For criminal matters prosecuted under a city court’s jurisdiction, search the correct Municipal Court.

Maricopa Criminal Court Jurisdiction Explained

Arizona’s Superior Courts, Justice Courts and Municipal Courts are different systems. They do not all maintain the same records, even when the case involves the same individual.

Case-transfer tip: A felony allegation can begin with proceedings in a limited-jurisdiction court and later continue in Superior Court. The records and case numbers may differ. Check both levels when the documents indicate a transfer or preliminary proceeding.

Search Maricopa County Superior Court Criminal Cases

The Maricopa County Superior Court Criminal Court Case Information system supports searching by defendant name, initials and date of birth, or case number.

What to do after opening the search

  1. 1

    Choose the search method

Use Search by Case Number if you already have the CR case identifier. Otherwise choose the last-name/first-name fields. The portal also offers an initials and date-of-birth search.

  2. 2

    Enter the known information

Begin with a precise case number. If you are searching by name, enter the last name and first name carefully and submit the search.

  3. 3

    Compare possible matches

Look at available case identifiers, defendant details, filing information and case status. Common names can return unrelated individuals.

  4. 4

    Open the relevant criminal case

Read the docket, scheduled hearings, court events, and available minute entries. Do not treat the initial charge as the final result.

  5. 5

    Check later court actions

Look for dismissals, pleas, verdicts, sentencing entries, post-conviction motions or other subsequent orders. Record the exact case number.

  6. 6

    Request actual documents if necessary

A docket summary is not necessarily the filed document. Use the Clerk’s Obtaining Records page or Arizona eAccess for available documents and certified copies.

Availability detail: The court reports that its docket data may undergo changes during auditing, and the docket system has a scheduled maintenance window Tuesday through Saturday, 3:00–4:00 a.m. Arizona local time. Check the court’s current notices if the website is unavailable.

How to Search Maricopa County Justice Court Criminal Records

Maricopa County operates 26 Justice Courts. Their records are separate from Superior Court and Municipal Court files. The official case-search interface includes name, business name and case-number search options.

  1. 1

    Open the official Case Search

Choose the Name or Case Number search tab.

  2. 2

Enter a name or complete case number

The name search shows last name, first name and optional date-of-birth fields. Case numbers must follow the format accepted by the portal.

  3. 3

    Identify the specific Justice Court

Note which court handled the matter. Justice Courts operate separately, so this determines where documents must be requested.

  4. 4

    Review the docket

Check charge information, hearings, procedural activity and any available disposition.

  5. 5

    Request the official record

Use the Justice Courts’ Request Records instructions. Most ordinary requests should go to the specific court that heard the case.

Important Justice Court rule: The courts say their clerks do not perform background checks, and record requests without a case number may be declined. Search the case number first and use the correct court’s records-request process.

Justice Courts administrative contact: 222 N. Central Avenue, #210, Phoenix, AZ 85004; phone (602) 506-8530. This is not a substitute for contacting the individual Justice Court that holds the case file.

Not every misdemeanor in Maricopa County belongs to the County Justice Courts. Municipal Courts have their own jurisdiction and records-request rules.

If you need a signed judgment, minute entry, sentencing document, dismissal order or certified case document, do not rely only on a publicly displayed docket.

For complex requests or certified copies, submit an online records request with the case number and document description.

Arizona eAccess provides qualifying Superior Court civil and criminal documents generally filed on or after July 1, 2010, subject to exclusions.

Documents can be purchased individually or under available subscription options. Additional certification fees may apply.

Before requesting copies, prepare these details

  • Full case number, including its prefix where required.
  • Name of the defendant or party.
  • Whether the case is Superior Court, Justice Court or Municipal Court.
  • Exact document needed: judgment, sentencing order, minute entry, disposition, or another filing.
  • Whether an ordinary copy or certified copy is required.
  • Preferred delivery method and any required payment.
Fees: Public case lookup may be free, but document purchases, copying, research or certification may cost money. Do not assume a universal Maricopa court-copy fee: check the fee schedule of the actual record custodian before submitting a request.

Arizona Statewide Court Lookup and Minute Entries

Arizona’s Public Access to Court Case Information offers a broader statewide search, useful when you are unsure which court handled the case.

Its search includes last or business name, first name, date of birth, court filter and case-number fields. The site also uses verification challenges before allowing some searches.

Update limitation: The public-access portal states that case information is not necessarily current, complete, or the official court record. Its published schedule describes weekly updates. The system also excludes certain sealed, protected and juvenile information and does not cover every Arizona court or every case.

Arizona DPS Criminal History Records: What the Public Can Actually Obtain

The Arizona Department of Public Safety maintains the state’s criminal-history Central State Repository under A.R.S. § 41-1750.

Unlike some other states, Arizona does not provide unrestricted public access to its statewide criminal-history repository for ordinary private background checks. DPS restricts criminal history access to authorized recipients and provides a separate process for individuals reviewing their own records.

Review your own Arizona criminal record

DPS offers a Record Review Packet or an online record-review route for the subject of the record.

Review the requirements, supply the necessary identity/fingerprint information and follow the official response instructions.

Open DPS Record Review ↗

Employment or licensing purposes

Authorized Arizona agencies may have access through statutory fingerprint-based processes. Employers and individuals should not assume they can purchase another person’s DPS repository file.

For applicable fingerprint clearance cards, DPS lists (602) 223-2279 as the clearance-card contact.

Authorized Agency Rules ↗
Do not make this mistake: An Arizona Superior Court case search is not a statewide DPS criminal-history report. An individual’s DPS record-review process is also not a general public service for searching someone else’s complete criminal history.

DPS general contact: 2222 W. Encanto Boulevard, Phoenix, AZ 85009; phone (602) 223-2000.

Custody is not conviction: A person can be booked into jail before any finding of guilt. An inmate or registry entry is not a substitute for checking the court’s final disposition.

Federal Criminal Cases Filed in Arizona

The U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona handles federal criminal proceedings. Its records are not part of Maricopa County’s Superior Court or Justice Courts databases.

Use PACER for federal case research. After registering or signing in, select the District of Arizona if you know the court. Use the PACER Case Locator when you do not know the federal court.

PACER can charge for access. Review its current fees and exemptions before retrieving documents.

How to Read a Maricopa Criminal Docket Correctly

A case listing can contain several different events. Reading only the original charge can produce a misleading picture.

Docket termWhat it indicatesNext check
Charge / ComplaintAn allegation or prosecution entryCheck disposition; allegation is not guilt
Initial AppearanceAn early proceeding after the case enters the court processReview later hearings and orders
Preliminary HearingA proceeding that may concern whether felony charges proceedCheck later Superior Court activity
PleaThe defendant’s recorded response or agreement, depending on contextRead the actual plea and judgment entries
DismissedA charge or case has been dismissedIdentify which counts and whether other charges remain
SentencingA court’s sentence following a qualifying finding or pleaObtain sentencing order if official verification is needed
Minute EntryA written entry documenting a court proceeding or actionRead its date, terms and any later modifications

Why You Cannot Find a Maricopa Criminal Record

If a public search returns nothing, it does not necessarily mean the person has never had a criminal case.

Wrong court searched

A felony case may be in Superior Court, a misdemeanor in a Justice or City Court, and a federal case in PACER.

Different spelling or case number

Search variations of first/last names, an alias where appropriate, or the full docket number.

Unavailable online

Older files, restricted document images and records not indexed on the internet may require a clerk request.

Sealed or otherwise restricted

Sealing, expungement, juvenile confidentiality and other Arizona access restrictions may limit public results.

Identity warning: Never identify a person as convicted based on a matching name alone. Verify the correct person, case, court and final disposition with the official custodian.

Public Access, Record Restrictions and Responsible Use

Arizona court access is governed by laws, court rules and restrictions that depend on the record type. Arizona Supreme Court Rule 123 is a key authority for access to judicial records.

A criminal case may appear in an online index without all document images being accessible. Juvenile records, sealed material and protected information have separate rules. Arizona’s record-sealing procedures can also change what the public may access.

For employment and tenant screening, the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act may impose additional obligations when consumer reports are used. Public court records alone do not automatically satisfy screening compliance requirements.
