Where to Search Travis County Criminal Court Records
Travis County provides multiple official record systems. Do not confuse a court case search with a criminal docket search: the first helps establish what has been filed and decided, while the second helps establish when and where a hearing is scheduled.

How to Search Travis County Criminal Cases in Odyssey
The Travis County District Clerk and County Clerk provide online access through Odyssey. The county’s official user guide explains the Smart Search workflow for names and case numbers.
Travis County Odyssey Court Records Search
Begin from the County Clerk or District Clerk’s official record page. Select the Odyssey search portal linked by that office.
Open the appropriate clerk’s portal
Choose the District Clerk for felonies or County Clerk for misdemeanors. Follow its link to the online court records search.
Choose Smart Search
On the Odyssey home screen, select Smart Search, rather than Search Hearings if your main purpose is to inspect case records.
Enter a cause number or party name
The official search field accepts a record number or name. Enter a name in Last, First Middle order, using the format shown by the portal.
Choose the location filter
Use All Locations or narrow the search to District Clerk or County Clerk where that option is available. This can reduce irrelevant cases.
Use Advanced Filtering Options if necessary
Apply the available filters to narrow cases by location or other permitted criteria.
Open a matching case
Check the cause number, court, defendant and other visible details. Do not assume that a shared name proves identity.
Review the Register of Actions
Read the filed events, orders, hearings, disposition and sentencing information shown publicly. Some documents have access restrictions.
Request certification if necessary
For an official copy or certified search letter, follow the relevant clerk’s records-request instructions.
Open the official Travis County Odyssey Portal User Guide (PDF).

Verify the setting close to the hearing

If your attorney or court has given you different instructions, follow those instructions instead of treating the website alone as authoritative.

District Clerk jurisdiction
Travis County Felony Criminal Court Records
The Travis County District Clerk is responsible for district-court felony case records. The official District Attorney guidance identifies cause numbers beginning with D-1-DC as felony cases handled by the District Attorney’s Office.
Example: D-1-DC-23...
The 23 portion identifies a case filed in 2023 under the county’s published numbering explanation. The remaining digits identify the individual case.
Public felony case access
The public Odyssey route provides available case summaries and the Register of Actions. Some attorney and peace-officer document access requires registration or authorization.
Older felony cases and archived files
The District Clerk’s criminal-history guidance notes that felony records before 2004 may have been archived and may not appear in the Odyssey summary system. The District Clerk’s separate online court-records service currently describes public online criminal case document coverage beginning in 2008.
Therefore, the absence of an older felony from a public portal does not establish that no case existed. Contact the District Clerk’s criminal records division for an archival search.

Case history and archives
Older Travis County Criminal Cases: What if Odyssey Has No Result?
A missing online result may be a data-coverage problem rather than proof that a case does not exist. The District Clerk’s public felony archive and the County Clerk’s misdemeanor datasets have different date ranges.
Older felony
Felony records before 2004 may be archived outside the public Odyssey summary search. The District Clerk’s online document portal also specifies criminal coverage beginning in 2008.
Next action: Request an archival search from the District Clerk’s criminal records division.
Older misdemeanor
Some misdemeanor data begins in 1981; other electronic case data and image collections have later starting dates.
Next action: Request an electronic, paper or microfilm search using the County Clerk’s applicable fees.
Statewide Texas records
Texas DPS Criminal History Checks Are Different From Travis County Court Cases
For statewide publicly releasable Texas criminal-history information, use the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Criminal History Name Search rather than treating Travis County’s court records as a statewide background check.
Texas Criminal History Name Search
Create a CRD Secure Website account, purchase search credits and follow the official search instructions. DPS explains that name searches can produce false matches and that fingerprint-based checks are more reliable for positive identification.
Open Texas DPS Criminal History SearchCreate a secure account
Use the official Texas DPS criminal-history website and complete the account requirements.
Purchase search credits
DPS currently lists $1 per search credit, with additional processing fees for credit-card purchases.
Enter permitted search details
Provide first and last name and useful identifying information when available and lawful.
Review potential matches carefully
Distinguish full, partial and phonetic matches. Name-only searches cannot confirm identity as reliably as fingerprints.
Use the appropriate official process for personal review
If disputing identity or checking your own fingerprint-linked records, follow DPS personal-review instructions.
Custody information
Travis County Jail and Inmate Records
A Travis County criminal case does not necessarily mean the person is currently detained. For current custody, use the Travis County Sheriff’s Office inmate information service linked from the official county Criminal Courts page.
Current Inmate Information
Search current inmates by name using the Sheriff’s Office route. The court’s case status and the jail’s custody status are separate records.
Find Official Inmate SearchDo not treat a jail booking as proof of conviction. If a criminal charge was filed, use Odyssey to review the corresponding case and court disposition.

- Whether the charge was dismissed or resolved
- Whether documents were later sealed or restricted
