Utah Criminal Records Search: Cases & Public Records
Utah Criminal Records Search: Court Cases, Dockets & Public Records
To search Utah criminal court records statewide, use the Utah State Courts’ official Xchange Public Case Search. It provides public case information from Utah District Courts and Justice Courts, including criminal charges, case events, hearings and dispositions.
Xchange requires payment for remote public searching. However, free alternatives exist: many district courthouses provide public Xchange terminals, and people involved in their own cases can use the Utah Courts’ free MyCourtCase system.
Research review: October 17, 2026. This is an independent public-record guide and not a Utah State Courts or Department of Public Safety website.
Where to Search Utah Criminal Records Online
Utah criminal records are maintained by different agencies. Before paying for a search, identify whether you need a public prosecution, your own case documents, your personal criminal-history report, an inmate record or a federal case.
| Information needed | Official source | Access and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| State criminal case or docket | Utah Xchange | Paid online public search covering available District and Justice Court cases. |
| Your own criminal court case | MyCourtCase | Free for authorized case participants; identity verification required. |
| Free public court-record inspection | Courthouse Xchange terminals | Available at most district courthouses and the Utah State Law Library; call to confirm. |
| Certified criminal judgment | Clerk of the filing court | Request the actual court document through official records procedures. |
| Your complete Utah criminal-history record | Utah BCI | $20 right-of-access request for the individual’s own Utah history. |
| State prison or parole/probation offender | Utah Department of Corrections | Public information about qualifying people supervised by Utah Corrections. |
| Sex, kidnap or child-abuse offender registration | Utah DPS Registry | Public registration information within the registry’s statutory scope. |
| Federal criminal prosecution | PACER | Federal case search; account and usage charges may apply. |
How to Search Utah Criminal Court Records Using Xchange
Xchange retrieves public case information entered by Utah courts into the Courts Information System (CORIS). Its search screen allows users to select court jurisdiction, case type, search scope, names, case numbers and other identifying details.
-
Open the official Xchange website.
Visit xchange.utcourts.gov. Select the guest, one-time account or subscription option that fits your expected usage.
-
Complete the access and payment process.
For remote public searches, follow Xchange’s registration, verification and payment instructions. Check the actual charge displayed before submitting a payment.
-
Choose District Court, Justice Court or both.
Utah felony and Class A misdemeanor cases belong in District Court. Most Class B and C misdemeanors, municipal ordinances and traffic matters are handled by Justice Courts.
-
Select the search type.
The official search offers options for court cases or judgments. Choose the general case search when trying to locate a criminal prosecution.
-
Enter the case number or party name.
Use the complete number when known. For a name search, enter the surname and first name using Xchange’s supported fields.
-
Use the asterisk wildcard when needed.
The Utah Courts recommend an asterisk (*) to capture spelling variations, middle initials and middle names. For example, enter John* as the first name to include John with different recorded middle names.
-
Set the location or date filters.
Select statewide scope if you do not know the filing county. Otherwise narrow the search by county, individual court, case type or filing date to reduce unrelated matches.
-
Review the matching records.
Compare the county, court location, case number, filing date, case type and lawfully available identifying information. Case numbers are not necessarily unique statewide.
-
Open the case history.
Click the case number or case-history link to review the charges, plea, disposition, hearings, judge, attorneys and recorded court activity.
-
Inspect the final disposition and documents.
For a completed criminal case, locate the disposition on the relevant charge. Some available public district court documents can be purchased through Xchange for $1 each.
What information does Xchange show?
For publicly accessible criminal cases, the Xchange extended case history can include the defendant, criminal charges, severity classification, plea dates, charge dispositions, the prosecuting agency, citation information, court events and case-accounting entries.
The record can show the charged offense as well as the later disposition. These may differ if charges were reduced, dismissed, amended or resolved through another procedure.
How old are Utah court records in Xchange?
Most Utah District Courts were using CORIS by the end of 1998. Justice Courts adopted the system at different times and made separate choices about converting older cases.
Therefore, historical coverage differs by court. A criminal case from 1993 may exist in the original courthouse or state archives even if Xchange does not return it.
The Utah judiciary also states that electronically available public District Court documents filed since July 1, 2010 are generally accessible for purchase on Xchange, subject to public-access restrictions.
Utah Xchange Criminal Record Search Fees
Utah charges for remote public use of Xchange, while many courthouse terminals offer free public inspection. The official public service publishes these principal access costs:
| Xchange service | Published cost | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Guest or one-time online access | $10 initial payment | Paid entry to the remote public search. The court’s website, rule and live registration screen contain differing per-search descriptions; check the live checkout terms. |
| Monthly subscription | $25 setup + $40/month | Includes up to 500 searches per monthly billing cycle. |
| Subscription searches over 500 | $0.35 each | Published additional-search charge for monthly subscribers. |
| Available online public court document | $1 per document | Applies to documents made available for purchase in Xchange. |
| Courthouse public Xchange terminal | Free to search | Available at most Utah District Court locations; verify before visiting. |
| MyCourtCase for an authorized participant | Free | Case history and eligible filed documents for people with party access. |
| Certified court document | $4/document + $0.50/page | Utah Courts’ published certification schedule; additional services may differ. |
For people performing large numbers of legitimate searches, a monthly subscription may be more suitable than repeated one-time payments. For someone checking a single personal case, the free MyCourtCase or courthouse route may be more appropriate.
How to Search Utah Criminal Court Records for Free
Utah provides two important free ways to view eligible court case information. The correct choice depends on whether the case is your own and whether you can visit a courthouse.
MyCourtCase
People who are authorized parties to District Court and Justice Court cases can use MyCourtCase without paying for Xchange.
Eligible users can view case history, read filed papers, make payments, receive court notifications and link multiple personal cases.

District Court vs. Justice Court: Which Court Has the Criminal Record?
A statewide Utah criminal records search is only useful if it includes the correct court type. Utah separates more serious criminal cases from many lower-level misdemeanor and municipal proceedings.
Utah District Courts
Utah District Courts are courts of general jurisdiction. They hear all felony criminal cases and Class A misdemeanor cases, along with civil and other proceedings.
For a felony charge in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, St. George or another Utah community, begin with the appropriate District Court.
Official records custodian: Clerk of the District Court where the case was filed.
Utah Justice Courts
Justice Courts generally handle Class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, traffic matters and local ordinance violations.
Some city and county Justice Courts have their own locations and clerks, even within the same county.
Official records custodian: Clerk of the particular Justice Court handling the case.
Does Xchange include juvenile criminal cases?
No. Utah juvenile delinquency records are handled in the juvenile court system and are subject to different confidentiality and access provisions. They should not be expected in the ordinary public Xchange criminal search.
Similarly, expunged cases and cases sealed by court order are not displayed in public Xchange.
Utah Criminal Court Records by County and Judicial District
Utah has eight judicial districts. Xchange supports searching statewide or narrowing to a county or particular court. The filing location still matters when ordering certified records or locating historical files.
| Judicial district | Counties | Practical search guidance |
|---|---|---|
| First District | Box Elder, Cache, Rich | Start here for felony and Class A misdemeanor cases involving Logan, Brigham City and the surrounding district. |
| Second District | Davis, Morgan, Weber | Includes district court matters in the Ogden and Farmington areas. Justice Court cases may be filed separately. |
| Third District | Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele | Includes Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Tooele and Summit County proceedings. Check the exact court location. |
| Fourth District | Juab, Millard, Utah, Wasatch | Includes Provo and Utah County felony cases as well as other District Court locations. |
| Fifth District | Beaver, Iron, Washington | Includes St. George and Cedar City area District Court proceedings. |
| Sixth District | Garfield, Kane, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier, Wayne | Use county and location filters for smaller rural courthouses, where historical coverage may differ. |
| Seventh District | Carbon, Emery, Grand, San Juan | Includes cases associated with Price, Moab and the southeastern Utah region. |
| Eighth District | Daggett, Duchesne, Uintah | Includes the Vernal and Duchesne areas. Confirm which court originated the proceeding. |

How to Obtain Certified Utah Criminal Court Records
A public Xchange docket may identify the case’s judgment, but it is not the same as a certified copy of that judgment. For immigration, licensing, legal or other official purposes, request the required document from the court that maintains the case.
-
Find the criminal case.
Use Xchange, MyCourtCase or a courthouse public terminal. Write down the complete case number, county, court type and disposition.
-
Determine the record custodian.
District Court and Justice Court records are maintained by their respective clerks. Use the filing court rather than an unrelated county office.
-
Identify the exact document.
For example, request the signed judgment of conviction, dismissal order, sentencing order, plea in abeyance disposition or another specific record.
-
Submit the Request for Court Record form.
Use the Utah State Courts’ official request procedure when a document is not directly accessible or when staff must provide it.
-
Specify certification if required.
Ask for a certified copy when a recipient needs proof that the record is a true copy maintained by the court.
-
Confirm copying, certification and staff charges.
The court may contact you about payment arrangements and allowable access limitations.
-
Receive the record through the authorized method.
Follow the Clerk’s instructions for pickup, mailing or other permitted delivery.
Utah court document and records-request fees
| Service | Published charge | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Certified copy of a court document | $4/document + $0.50/page | Separate statutory certification and per-page charges. |
| Exemplified document | $6/document + $0.50/page | Additional authentication for certain formal uses. |
| Ordinary paper record copies | $0.25/sheet | Utah court records rule; not necessarily the same service as statutory certified copies. |
| Fax or email of qualifying records | $5 up to 10 pages | Additional pages are $0.50 each. Courts generally do not email or fax records already available on Xchange. |
| Court hearing recording | $15 per half-day | Electronic audio or video copy of court proceedings when available. |
| Staff-assisted records retrieval | Varies | First 15 minutes of qualifying staff time are generally free, with rule-specific exceptions; additional time can be charged. |
Utah Courts state that ordinary court-record requests are usually answered within approximately 10 business days, although an older, extensive or restricted-record request may require further processing.
How to get an old Utah criminal case
Some historical court cases were filed before the court used CORIS and therefore may not be searchable in Xchange. Contact the original court, especially for older Justice Court and municipal records.
For substantially older court material, the Utah State Courts historical records directory points to Utah State Archives, which holds many historical District, Supreme, municipal and Justice Court records.
How to Request Your Own Utah Criminal Record From BCI
The Utah Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) manages the state’s criminal-history records. This is different from Xchange, which searches court cases.
Under BCI’s Right of Access procedure, an individual can request a copy of their own Utah criminal-history record, either in person or through the mail.
4315 South 2700 West, Suite 1300
Taylorsville, UT 84129
Telephone: 801-965-4445
Office hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., excluding weekends and state holidays.
Right of Access fee: $20.
Option 1: Request your Utah history in person
-
Visit the official BCI criminal records page.
Review the current personal-record request instructions and accepted forms of identification.
-
Prepare valid photo identification.
BCI requires government-issued photographic identification and states that a Utah Driving Privilege Card is not accepted for this purpose.
-
Visit the Taylorsville BCI office.
BCI is in the Taylorsville State Office Building, on the first floor beyond the information desk.
-
Pay the $20 fee.
Follow BCI’s accepted payment instructions.
-
Review your returned record.
Check whether arrests, charges and court dispositions have been accurately associated with your identity.
Option 2: Request your Utah history by mail
Download the Criminal History Record Application from BCI’s official forms page. Complete the application and follow its identification, signature, payment and mailing requirements.
Send the request to the official BCI address shown above, after reviewing the current application instructions.
Can you search another person’s full Utah criminal history?
Not through an unrestricted public BCI criminal-history lookup. Public court records can be searched through Xchange, but BCI criminal-history access is governed by separate authorization and disclosure requirements.
Authorized employment, licensing and volunteer background checks have their own procedures. An eligible entity should use the BCI process applicable to that purpose rather than requesting that an individual simply supply an unrestricted record.
How to correct an inaccurate Utah criminal history
BCI provides a Record Challenge process for individuals who believe their own history contains incorrect or incomplete information.
The currently published fee is $20 for a record challenge request. Obtain any supporting court judgments, dismissal documents or other relevant records and use BCI’s official challenge form.
Utah Inmate Search, Court Calendars, Offender Registry and Federal Cases
Offender Search
Search available records of individuals currently incarcerated or supervised on probation or parole by the Utah Department of Corrections.
Search by name or UDC offender number. County jail detainees awaiting trial or sentencing are not necessarily included.
Open Offender Search ↗Registered Offenders
Access Utah’s official public registry information for qualifying sex, kidnap and child-abuse offender registrations.
Registration information is not a complete criminal-history report.
Official Registry Links ↗Federal Criminal Cases
Federal prosecutions in Utah are handled by the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, separate from Utah’s Xchange system.
Use PACER to find qualifying federal dockets and documents.
Search PACER ↗How to find an upcoming Utah criminal court hearing
Utah Courts publish District and Justice Court calendar information, generally showing scheduled activity over a two-week period and updating it daily.
Start from the Utah State Courts homepage and select Find a Hearing. For your own case, MyCourtCase may also show upcoming settings and notifications.
Always verify an important hearing with the assigned court if the online calendar or docket conflicts with a summons or judicial notice.
Current county jail bookings
County jail bookings are separate from Utah Department of Corrections records. For a person recently arrested in Salt Lake, Utah, Weber, Davis or Washington County, identify the responsible county sheriff and its authorized inmate search.
A person can be in a county jail before formal charges appear in District or Justice Court. A booking should not be represented as a conviction.
Appellate criminal cases
Appeals from Utah criminal judgments may appear in separate Utah Court of Appeals or Supreme Court dockets. Those appellate cases are not part of the ordinary Xchange trial-court database.
Use the Utah Court Records directory to access the appellate docket search.
How to Understand Utah Criminal Case Dispositions
A case may include several criminal charges and court events. The filed charge is not necessarily the final outcome, particularly when a plea agreement or amended charge occurred.
| Record term | What it generally indicates | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Information filed | The prosecution filed a formal criminal charging document. | Look for later court action; filing does not establish guilt. |
| Arraignment | A court proceeding involving the charge and plea. | Review later hearings and the outcome. |
| Plea entered | A guilty, not guilty or other recognized plea was recorded. | Check whether the court accepted the plea and entered a judgment. |
| Plea in abeyance | A Utah procedure in which a plea may be held under agreed conditions. | Find the final order after conditions were completed or not completed. |
| Dismissed | The court dismissed a case or specified charge. | Confirm which counts were dismissed and whether others remain. |
| Acquitted | The person was found not guilty on specified charges. | Review the exact verdict or disposition. |
| Convicted / sentenced | A judgment of guilt or sentence was entered. | Read the actual judgment and any later modification or appeal. |
| Case closed | An administrative status. | Closed does not by itself prove conviction, dismissal or acquittal. |
Utah Criminal Record Expungement and Clean Slate in 2026
Utah has both automatic expungement and petition-based record-clearing processes. These affect how eligible criminal cases appear in public Xchange results.
An important change took effect on January 1, 2026: Utah courts no longer require people to submit the former request form asking the court to check whether a case qualifies for automatic expungement. Courts now identify and process qualifying cases under the updated law.
Some Utah automatic expungement categories
Utah Courts provide the following general waiting periods for certain qualifying cases, subject to statutory restrictions, case limits and the satisfaction of outstanding financial obligations.
| Qualifying record category | General waiting period | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Certain Class A drug-possession matters | 7 years | Generally limited to qualifying cases under statutory restrictions. |
| Qualifying Class B misdemeanors | 6 years | Specific offense and case-count restrictions apply. |
| Qualifying Class C misdemeanors and infractions | 5 years | Additional eligibility and financial-obligation rules apply. |
| Certain acquittals and dismissals | Different automatic timelines | The disposition type matters, including whether dismissal followed a plea in abeyance. |
These are not universal deadlines. More serious felonies, specified assault offenses, DUI, domestic violence, sex offenses and other categories may require a different legal procedure or may be ineligible for automatic relief.
How to request expungement when automatic relief does not apply
-
Identify the case and final disposition.
Use MyCourtCase, Xchange or the original court to obtain the required information.
-
Check whether a petition is permitted.
Review Utah’s expungement eligibility rules and any outstanding financial or criminal-case restrictions.
-
Determine whether you need a BCI Certificate of Eligibility.
For many petition-based expungements, the individual must first apply to BCI.
-
Obtain the certificate if required.
Follow BCI’s eligibility application instructions and applicable fees.
-
File before the certificate expires.
Utah Courts state that a Certificate of Eligibility is valid for 180 days from issuance for the applicable filing procedure.
-
Use the correct court forms and filing location.
File the petition according to the original criminal case and court’s instructions.
-
Follow notice and hearing requirements.
Allow the court to determine whether relief is granted under the applicable law.
-
Keep the expungement order.
If relief is granted, follow the required records-update procedures and retain authorized confirmation.
Why a Utah Criminal Record May Not Appear in Xchange
| Problem | Possible explanation | Recommended next step |
|---|---|---|
| No result for a name | Middle name, spelling variation, alias or overly specific search terms. | Use the official asterisk wildcard and try reasonable variations. |
| Only a felony appears, not a city misdemeanor | You may have limited the search to District Court. | Search Justice Court records and confirm the municipal court. |
| Case number returns several results | Utah case numbers are not always unique statewide. | Compare county, court and filing date before selecting a case. |
| More than 500 matches | The search is too broad. | Add a known county, location, case type or date range. |
| Older Justice Court case missing | The court may not have used CORIS at the time or converted the record. | Contact the original Justice Court clerk about historical records. |
| Public docket exists but document unavailable | Document may be older, nonpublic, unscanned or unavailable online. | Ask the filing court about lawful inspection or copies. |
| Case was expunged | Expunged cases are removed from Xchange. | Use MyCourtCase or the court’s authorized expunged-record procedure if eligible. |
| Juvenile case not found | Juvenile proceedings are not included in public Xchange. | Follow the Juvenile Court’s confidentiality and authorized access process. |
| Federal criminal case missing | Xchange does not include federal prosecutions or bankruptcy cases. | Search PACER or the relevant federal court. |
| Court record contains incorrect information | Entry error or incomplete disposition in CORIS. | Contact the clerk of the court that maintains the official case. |
What if a Utah court record is inaccurate?
The Utah judiciary says the original District or Justice Court clerk is responsible for its court records. If an Xchange entry appears incorrect, identify the case number, describe the problem and contact the filing court.
If your BCI criminal-history record is inaccurate, use BCI’s separate Record Challenge procedure. Correcting a court docket and correcting a statewide criminal-history entry are different tasks.

Official search help: Xchange FAQs and troubleshooting
If the issue concerns a specific case rather than the Xchange software, use the Utah Court Directory to find the clerk handling that case.
Are Utah Criminal Court Records the Same as a Background Check?
No. A public Xchange result describes court cases and the events entered by the judiciary. It is not automatically a complete Utah or nationwide fingerprint-based criminal-history report.
For employment, housing, licensing or similar decisions, additional state and federal requirements may apply. The Fair Credit Reporting Act also governs many consumer background-screening activities.
A filed charge is not proof of conviction, and a person with the same name is not necessarily the subject of a returned case. Verify the actual court disposition and identity before relying on a record.
Utah Criminal Records Search FAQs
1. How do I search Utah criminal court records online?
Use Utah State Courts’ official Xchange Public Case Search at xchange.utcourts.gov. Select District Court, Justice Court or both, then search using the case number, party name or other available criteria. Remote public searching requires payment.
2. Is the Utah criminal records search free?
Remote public Xchange searches are paid. However, many Utah District Courts and the Utah State Law Library provide free public Xchange terminal access. People authorized to access their own cases can also use MyCourtCase for free.
3. How much does Utah Xchange cost?
Xchange charges an initial $10 for guest or one-time remote access. Its subscription costs $25 to set up plus $40 monthly for up to 500 searches. The published price for available online documents is $1 each. Confirm the per-search terms at checkout because official sources contain differing descriptions.
4. What is the difference between Utah Xchange and MyCourtCase?
Xchange is the public case-search system for eligible District and Justice Court records. MyCourtCase is a free system for authorized people involved in a case, including eligible defendants and victims. MyCourtCase is not an unrestricted public search of other people’s cases.
5. Can I search Utah criminal cases by name?
Yes. Xchange supports party-name searches, and the courts recommend using the asterisk wildcard to include spelling variations, middle names and initials. Use county and date filters to narrow large result sets.
6. How far back do Utah criminal court records go?
Most District Courts began using CORIS by the end of 1998. Justice Court coverage varies by court, and older converted records may contain less detail. Historical files may require contacting the original court or Utah State Archives.
7. Where do I get a certified Utah criminal court disposition?
Contact the clerk of the District or Justice Court where the case was filed. Identify the exact judgment, dismissal or sentencing document and request a certified copy. Utah Courts list $4 per document plus $0.50 per page for certified copies under the applicable fee schedule.
8. How do I obtain my own Utah criminal-history record?
Use the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification’s Right of Access process. You may apply in person at the Taylorsville BCI office or by mail. The currently published fee is $20.
9. Why does a criminal case not appear in Utah Xchange?
The record may be sealed, expunged, confidential, from Juvenile Court, outside the current coverage period, or filed under a different name or jurisdiction. Xchange does not include federal prosecutions. A missing result does not prove no case existed.
10. Does Utah automatically expunge criminal records?
Utah provides automatic expungement for specified qualifying cases. As of January 1, 2026, courts identify cases eligible for automatic expungement without requiring the former request form. Other records may require a petition and possibly a BCI Certificate of Eligibility.
