Orange County, Florida, belongs to the state’s Ninth Judicial Circuit. The Orange County Clerk of Courts maintains criminal felony, misdemeanor and other court records filed within its jurisdiction.
The Clerk provides free public access to available electronic case information through my eClerk.
The official search website has several helpful restrictions and coverage details:
- Both first name and last name are required for a name search.
- A date-range search requires both Date From and Date To.
- Search results are limited to the first 500 matches.
- Online docket information covers most cases filed from approximately 1990 onward.
- Documents are available for most case types from approximately 2009 onward.
- Anonymous users must complete a CAPTCHA for each search.
Step-by-step: Search by defendant name

-

When using dates, provide both starting and ending dates. Avoid unnecessarily broad searches when a case was filed during a known year.

Anonymous visitors must complete the required verification before submitting the search.
-
Select Search
Review the result list. If more than 500 records match, narrow the search by case type, names or filing dates.
-

Select the case number and review the available docket, criminal charges, hearing history and disposition information.
-
Check for associated court documents
Where available, inspect the public documents. If a document is unavailable or restricted, contact the Clerk about lawful access and copies.

When searching my eClerk by case number, the official system describes these formats:
YYYY-XX-999999-A-O
Full case-number format with year, case type, sequence and additional case identifiers.
YYYY-XX-999999-O
Alternative case-number format accepted by my eClerk for qualifying cases.
Use the case number exactly as shown on the court paperwork. A citation number has a separate field and should not be confused with the full criminal case number.

Record the case number, defendant name, case type and approximate filing date.
-

-
Use the Clerk’s Records Request process
Contact Records Management for documents not available through ordinary electronic viewing. The Clerk also provides an electronic certification service for eligible documents.
-

Ask for a price estimate and applicable processing information before submitting payment.

How to Search Orange County California Criminal Records Online
Orange County, California, criminal cases are maintained by the Superior Court of California, County of Orange.
The court handles felony, misdemeanor and qualifying criminal traffic matters. Criminal cases may involve courts serving Santa Ana, Anaheim, Irvine, Fullerton, Newport Beach, Westminster and other communities.
The court’s public website separates two important services:
- Criminal & Traffic Case Access: View available case information when you know the case or citation number.
- Case Name Search: Search court cases by person or business name using a registered account and purchased search credits.
Option 1: Search California Orange County records by case number
-
Open the Superior Court Criminal & Traffic Cases page
Visit the official Criminal and Traffic Case Access system.
-
Read the court’s conditions
The court warns that online information does not constitute an official certified court record and that case-name associations can sometimes be inaccurate.
-
Accept the terms
Use the court’s official public search interface.
-
Enter the case or citation number
Use the information supplied on a citation, summons, court notice or other official case document.
-
Open the result
Review the available criminal or traffic case details, court events and relevant information.
-
Verify the final disposition
If the result affects an important decision, obtain the official judgment or other certified court document from the responsible Justice Center.
Option 2: Search by defendant name
If you do not have a California Orange County case number, the Superior Court provides Case Name Search.
Unlike Florida’s my eClerk system, the California online name-search application requires an account and payment for most members of the public.
-
Open Case Name Search
Visit the official court name-search application through the Superior Court’s Online Services menu.
-
Create an account
Select Enroll and provide the required account information.
-
Activate your account
Use the activation link sent to the email address you registered.
-
Purchase a search package
Open Pre-Pay Options, select the appropriate search-credit package and complete payment through the official court service.
-
Choose Criminal as the case type
The system defaults to all case types, so select Criminal if your purpose is to locate criminal cases specifically.
-
Enter the person’s name and filing dates
The search requires at least two characters of the last name and a filing-date range with both From and To dates in MM/DD/YYYY format. Middle name is optional.
-
Review matching case numbers
Search results provide case numbers and filing dates. Select the relevant case number to view the available case activity.
The court’s Case Name Search does not support searching by an alias. It also limits overly broad searches returning more than 500 records. Use a narrower filing-date range or Exact rather than Similar matching where appropriate.
What if a California traffic ticket does not appear?
The court states that traffic citations may take up to 21 days after issuance to become available in its online case system.
If an appearance or payment deadline is approaching, contact the court rather than assuming that an absent online citation means no action is required.

Understand what the docket actually says
How to Tell Whether an Orange County Criminal Case Ended in Conviction
A criminal case can contain multiple charges and different outcomes. The original accusation is not the same as a final conviction.
| Court term | General meaning | What it means for the search |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest / Booking | Person taken into custody | Does not prove guilt or conviction |
| Charged / Filed | Formal criminal accusation filed | Check for later case outcome |
| Pending | Case not yet fully resolved | Check current hearing dates and entries |
| Dismissed / Nolle Prosequi | Charge or prosecution ended without an ordinary conviction on that charge | Do not describe the dismissed charge as a conviction |
| Acquitted / Not Guilty | Court or jury did not find guilt | Not a conviction on that charge |
| Guilty / Convicted | Guilty finding or conviction recorded | Review judgment, sentence and any later orders |
| Adjudication Withheld | Florida-specific disposition where adjudication of guilt is withheld | Do not automatically treat it as an ordinary adjudicated conviction |
| Deferred Adjudication / Diversion | Special procedure governed by applicable state law | Review the exact outcome and legal purpose of the check |
Why Florida and California disposition terminology differs
Florida courts may use terms such as adjudication withheld, while California courts may use terminology such as probation, dismissal after conviction or petition for dismissal.
These procedures do not have identical legal effects. Always read the court’s actual final order rather than assuming similarly named processes mean the same thing.
A matching name alone does not prove that a criminal case belongs to a particular person. Compare reliable, lawfully available identifiers and obtain appropriate official verification when the result has serious consequences.
Records not available to ordinary public searches
Sealed and Expunged Orange County Criminal Records
A criminal case may not appear publicly because it was sealed, expunged, restricted by law or removed from ordinary electronic access.
The process for clearing criminal history varies significantly between Florida, California, New York and North Carolina.
Florida: Sealing and Expungement
Florida has statutory procedures for qualifying court-ordered sealing and expungement under sections 943.0585 and 943.059, Florida Statutes, and related provisions.
Applicants generally must first determine eligibility through FDLE before completing the appropriate court procedure.
A dismissed case is not automatically expunged merely because the prosecution ended.
FDLE Record Sealing and Expungement →California: Cleaning Up Your Criminal Record
California offers different forms of record relief, including qualifying conviction dismissals, certain felony reductions and statutory arrest-record sealing procedures.
The Orange County Superior Court provides a detailed criminal-record-clearing guide and information about its Public Defender’s Clean Slate Program.
Eligibility depends on the case and controlling law.
California Criminal Record Clearing →Older files may be archived, cases may not yet be indexed, search criteria may be wrong, and some documents are unavailable remotely. A no-results search does not establish which explanation applies.
Fix common search problems
Why Your Orange County Criminal Records Search Finds Nothing
| Problem | Likely explanation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Florida search returns no name match | Name spelling, wrong case type or filing-date issue | Enter first and last names; broaden dates or use the case number |
| Florida search returns too many cases | my eClerk caps results at 500 | Narrow the case type, add a middle name or use a date range |
| Florida old case lacks documents | Older than routine electronic document coverage | Contact Records Management |
| California name search demands payment | Case Name Search requires registered paid access for ordinary public users | Use a known case number or ask about courthouse public terminals |
| California case-name search returns many results | Similar-name search or broad filing dates | Use Exact match and a narrower date range |
| Recent California traffic citation missing | Citation may take up to 21 days to appear | Contact the court before a required appearance or payment deadline |
| California jail search asks for account | Sheriff moved current inmate search to authenticated portal | Create an account through the official Sheriff Public Services Portal |
| California inmate charges not visible | Current Sheriff’s inmate portal does not display charges | Use Superior Court case information where available |
| Person was arrested in another county | Orange County court database covers its own jurisdiction | Search the county where the prosecution was filed |
| A charge appears without final disposition | Case pending, incomplete reporting or missing document | Request the official case outcome from the court clerk |
What if a court docket contains an error?
Contact the court that maintains the case. Provide the correct case number and explain which entry appears inaccurate.
If the error is in a state criminal-history repository rather than the court’s official record, the correction may need to be processed through the reporting agency or the state criminal-history bureau.
Preserve certified court documents, especially when a dismissal, amended charge or expungement order has not been reflected in a separate database.
Court records versus official background screening
Can Orange County Criminal Records Be Used for Employment or Tenant Background Checks?
Public criminal court dockets can help locate case information, but they are not equivalent to a fingerprint-based identity check or legally compliant consumer background report.
Employment, housing and other eligibility screening can trigger federal Fair Credit Reporting Act obligations and state-specific rules.
For example:
- California has laws governing the use of criminal-history information in employment decisions.
- Florida state criminal-history checks are administered through FDLE for ordinary public requests and through separate authorised procedures for certain regulated purposes.
- North Carolina distinguishes public courthouse record searches from certified background checks.
- A commercial consumer reporting agency may have separate accuracy, dispute and notification duties.
When interpreting a record, confirm the person’s identity, review the final court disposition and consider whether the record is legally restricted.
