Summit County Criminal Records Search: Court Cases, Dockets and Public Records

To search Summit County criminal records in Ohio, use the official Summit County Clerk of Courts case-search portal for felony cases. Select the Criminal division, then search the available records by defendant or case information.

For misdemeanor cases, traffic charges and preliminary felony proceedings, use the separate municipal court systems in Akron, Barberton or Stow. Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) handles official fingerprint-based criminal-history records, while the Summit County Sheriff’s Office maintains separate law-enforcement and jail records.

Jurisdiction: Summit County, Ohio
County seat: Akron
Felony records: Court of Common Pleas, Criminal Division

Official-site safety warning: The Summit County Clerk of Courts has warned that a fraudulent website has impersonated its office and redirected users toward third-party records searches. Use the Clerk’s official website at clerkweb.summitoh.net and its linked case-search pages. Do not enter payment information on a lookalike court website.

Start at the right official database

Where Can You Search Summit County Criminal Records?

Summit County does not maintain one public search system for every criminal court and law-enforcement record. Its Court of Common Pleas felony files and three major municipal court systems use different databases.

Record needed Official system What it covers
Felony criminal case Summit County Clerk of Courts Common Pleas Criminal Division case records and docket information
Akron-area misdemeanor Akron Municipal Court Akron Municipal criminal and traffic proceedings
Barberton-area misdemeanor Barberton CaseLook Barberton Municipal criminal, traffic, hearing and warrant-related records
Stow-area misdemeanor Stow Municipal Court Case Information Northern Summit County criminal, traffic and court-date information
Sheriff local criminal-record check Summit County Sheriff Records & ID Local criminal-history research and fingerprint services
Official Ohio personal criminal history Ohio BCI Fingerprint-based records held in the Ohio criminal-history repository
Ohio state prison information Ohio ODRC Offender Search Qualifying state incarceration, release and supervision information
Important: A felony may begin with an initial appearance in a municipal court before proceeding to Common Pleas Court. Searching only the earlier municipal record can miss the later indictment, plea, trial or sentencing decision.

Court of Common Pleas Criminal Division

How to Search Summit County Felony Criminal Records Online

The Summit County Clerk of Courts states that its Criminal Division handles felony cases throughout Summit County. The division maintains court filings and reports dispositions to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Its public case-search website has a division-selection page with options including Criminal, Civil, Domestic Relations and Court of Appeals.

Step-by-step felony case lookup

  1. Open the official Clerk’s public records portal

Start at clerkweb.summitoh.net or use the direct search link above. If the portal requires an acknowledgment or displays a disclaimer, read and accept it to continue.

  2. Select the Criminal division

Choose Criminal rather than Civil, Domestic or Court of Appeals. This directs the search toward Common Pleas felony records.

  3. Choose the available search method

Use the defendant’s legal name or the criminal case number when the search screen offers those options. A precise case number generally helps distinguish people who share a name.

  4. Enter identifying case information

Provide the details requested by the portal. If a name search does not return the expected case, check spelling, alternative names and the possibility that the matter is still in municipal court.

  5. Open the matching case

Review available case details such as filing date, charges, judge, attorneys, court events, scheduled hearings and journal entries.

  6. Inspect the final disposition

Where available, look for the judgment, plea, dismissal, sentencing entry or other final action. A criminal complaint or indictment is not itself proof of conviction.

  7. Request copies if the online information is insufficient

The Clerk provides a public-records request process and an in-person File Room. For certified judgments or documents not available online, contact the Clerk’s office.

Important local detail: The Clerk recommends its website for records from 2002 to the present. Its Legal FAQs indicate that Criminal Division computer indexing goes back to 1986, but older indexed cases do not necessarily have complete records available online. For pre-2002 files, use the public-records request procedure.

What if the portal says the session expired?

The county’s case-search application may require a new session after inactivity. Return to the official Clerk homepage and reopen Public Records Search. Avoid using a third-party site as a workaround.

Three main municipal courts

Which Summit County Court Handles a Criminal Case?

Summit County’s Clerk identifies three municipal courts that handle most misdemeanor and traffic matters: Akron, Barberton and Stow. Some cases may also fall within a Mayor’s Court’s jurisdiction.

The city where an arrest happened, the location of the alleged offense and the stage of the prosecution can determine which court’s records you need.

Court Primary criminal jurisdiction Examples of communities served
Summit County Common Pleas Felony criminal cases All Summit County communities for felony Common Pleas proceedings
Akron Municipal Misdemeanors, traffic offenses and preliminary felony matters Akron, Fairlawn, Bath, Richfield, Springfield, Lakemore and the covered part of Mogadore
Barberton Municipal Misdemeanors, traffic cases and initial felony appearances Barberton, Green, Norton, New Franklin, Copley, Coventry and Clinton
Stow Municipal Misdemeanors, traffic offenses and other matters within its jurisdiction Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Twinsburg, Tallmadge, Macedonia and other northern Summit County communities

Why a criminal case can move between courts

Consider a felony arrest that begins with a hearing in Akron Municipal Court. If the prosecution later proceeds by indictment in the Court of Common Pleas, the felony trial and final judgment may be found through the Summit County Clerk’s Criminal Division rather than only in the original municipal docket.

A misdemeanor resolved entirely in Akron Municipal Court, by contrast, generally remains in that municipal court’s record system.

Search both stages when necessary: A municipal felony complaint and a later Common Pleas felony indictment are related proceedings but may appear under separate court case identifiers.

Akron, Fairlawn and surrounding communities

Akron Municipal Court Criminal Records Search

Akron Municipal Court maintains its own criminal, traffic and other case records separately from the Summit County Common Pleas public search.

The court launched a new electronic case-management system in September 2025 and now links to a Tyler Technologies public case-search portal.

How to search Akron criminal cases

  1. Open the Akron court’s official case search

Use the direct link above, which is also linked from akronmunicipalcourt.org.

  2. Select Smart Search

The current public portal identifies a Smart Search option for court records. It also provides Search Hearings for court events within a date range.

  3. Enter the accepted name or case details

Use the fields shown by the portal. Follow its instructions for filters and search criteria.

  4. Review the relevant court record

Check the defendant, charges, docket entries, hearing information and court outcomes where public.

  5. Contact the Clerk for verification

The online portal warns that case information can be amended. Request verified information when an official result is required.

Akron Municipal Court

Address: 172 S. Broadway Street
Akron, OH 44308
Phone: 330-375-2120

Akron Municipal Court copy requests

The court’s public-records page lists:

  • Certified copies: $1 per page
  • Authentication or triple seal: $3
  • Regular copies: No charge for the first 10 pages, then $0.25 for additional pages

Records can also be requested through the Clerk’s office in Suite 100 at 172 S. Broadway Street.

Barberton, Green, Norton and surrounding communities

Barberton Municipal Court Criminal Case Search

The Barberton Municipal Clerk of Court provides public case information through CaseLook, a court-record application operated by Henschen & Associates for the court.

This system offers Record Search, Hearing Calendar, Warrant List and Probation Search options. Unlike an unofficial records aggregator, CaseLook is directly linked from the Barberton Clerk’s official website.

How to search Barberton records

  1. Open the official CaseLook portal

Follow the link from the Barberton Clerk’s website.

  2. Select Record Search

Use the public record-search option rather than the separate hearing or warrant section when locating a case.

  3. Enter the available search details

Use the accepted name or case-number search fields.

  4. Check the docket and court events

Compare the charges, court dates and disposition information with your known case details.

  5. Request unavailable or older records

The Clerk recommends online access for records from 1996 onward. For earlier records, use the official public-records request process.

Barberton Municipal Clerk of Court

Address: 576 W. Park Avenue, Room 205
Barberton, OH 44203
Phone: 330-753-2261
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The court handles misdemeanor criminal and traffic cases, with initial felony appearances also occurring there.

Older-record tip: The Barberton Clerk specifically directs requests for records before 1996 through its written Public Records Request Form. Do not assume the absence of a pre-1996 case in CaseLook means the case never existed.

Northern Summit County misdemeanor cases

Stow Municipal Court Criminal Records and Dockets

Stow Municipal Court serves 16 communities in northern Summit County. These include Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Stow, Tallmadge, Twinsburg, Macedonia, Silver Lake, Munroe Falls, Peninsula, Northfield and surrounding jurisdictions.

The court’s official help page links to its Case Information system for criminal records, court dates and case outcomes.

How to search a Stow criminal case

  1. Open the official Case Information link

Use the Stow Municipal Court website and follow its Case Information link to the court’s eServices system.

  2. Enter the supported case information

Search with the available name, case or citation details.

  3. Check the correct court case

Verify the defendant, criminal or traffic charge, scheduled hearing and available docket information.

  4. Contact the Criminal/Traffic Department if necessary

The court directs criminal case inquiries to 330-564-4110, option 1.

Stow Municipal Court

Address: 4400 Courthouse Boulevard
Stow, OH 44224
Clerk of Courts: 330-564-4110
Criminal/Traffic: Option 1
Main court number: 330-564-4200

Searching for a Stow warrant

The Stow court states that its Clerk can search warrant information for cases filed in Stow Municipal Court only. That is not a countywide or statewide warrant clearance.

Use the official case-information portal or contact the Criminal/Traffic Department. Do not conclude that there is no outstanding warrant simply because an online name search returns nothing.

Photo-enforcement distinction: The Stow court explains that qualifying Peninsula traffic-camera citations are civil penalties rather than criminal traffic convictions. Do not treat a civil camera citation as proof of a criminal offense.

Court records and certified judgments

How to Request Certified Summit County Criminal Court Records

If a public case summary is insufficient, the Clerk can provide copies of eligible court documents. Common examples include judgments, sentencing entries, dismissals, journal entries and other specific filings.

The official Summit County Clerk recommends online access for records from 2002 onward and its public-records request procedure for older cases.

How to order a court document

  1. Identify the felony case

Find the case number through the county’s public case-search system or from court paperwork.

  2. Choose the exact document

Specify whether you need a judgment of conviction, sentencing entry, dismissal, public docket printout or another filing.

  3. Decide whether certification is required

Certification provides an official court copy. Ordinary downloaded case information may not satisfy an agency requiring certified proof.

  4. Use the official online request form

Submit the case details, party names, filing information and document description requested by the Clerk.

  5. Select the delivery method

The public request system offers options including pickup, mail and email. The form excludes certified copies from email delivery.

  6. Confirm the cost

Ask about copying, certification, authentication and delivery costs before submitting payment.

Older criminal case research

How Far Back Do Summit County Criminal Records Go?

Summit County’s online and historical record coverage requires careful interpretation.

2002 to present

The Clerk recommends using its online records system for records from 2002 to the present, where immediate access may be available.

1986 computer indexing

The Clerk’s Legal FAQs report Criminal Division computer case records going back to 1986. The availability of original documents and images can differ from the availability of basic indexing.

Before 2002

The Clerk recommends a Public Records Form submitted by email, mail or in person when researching older files.

Older municipal cases

Each municipal court maintains separate historical records. Barberton specifically recommends its online system for records from 1996 onward and a written request for earlier files.

For an older felony case, begin with the Common Pleas Clerk. For an older misdemeanor, contact the municipal or Mayor’s Court that originally handled the case.

If you do not know the court, try to obtain the arrest date, original citation, complaint or case number from existing paperwork.

Law-enforcement records rather than court files

Summit County Sheriff’s Criminal History, Arrest and Incident Records

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office maintains its own Records & ID Bureau. It provides criminal-record research services and processes eligible incident and accident record requests.

These records are not interchangeable with the final disposition maintained by a criminal court.

Local criminal-history checks

The Sheriff’s Office lists the following charges for its local criminal-record checks:

  • Non-government request: $10
  • Governmental, non-law-enforcement request: $2
  • Law-enforcement governmental request: Free

The Sheriff’s instructions state that criminal-history research requests can be made by telephone, mail or in person. Contact the Records & ID Bureau to confirm the identity requirements and what the response will cover.

Incident and arrest-related reports

The Sheriff’s Records & Reports page explains that eligible incident and accident reports may be requested by phone, by mail or in person, subject to applicable legal restrictions.

The office lists a $1.50 payment for the specified mail-request procedure, and its Records & ID office lists document copies at $0.10 per page. Ask which charge applies to your exact request before submitting payment.

Records location: Summit County Jail
205 E. Crosier Street
Akron, OH 44311

Incident/report requests: 330-643-2176
Records & ID directory: 330-643-5545
Records office hours: Weekdays, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

How to request a Sheriff’s report

  1. Identify the reporting law-enforcement agency

Make sure the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, rather than a city police department, created the report.

  2. Collect report details

Prepare the incident date, location, involved names and report number if known.

  3. Contact the Records & ID Bureau

Ask whether the report is publicly releasable and which request method applies.

  4. Confirm the applicable fee

Follow the office’s instructions for copies, mail requests or pickup.

  5. Request a court disposition separately

If charges were prosecuted, use the appropriate court database to establish the actual case outcome.

Restricted police records: The Sheriff’s Office expressly warns that not every police record is public. Personal information, protected investigations and other confidential material may be withheld or redacted under Ohio law.

Current custody is not a criminal judgment

Summit County Jail and Inmate Records

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office operates the Summit County Jail at 205 E. Crosier Street in Akron.

The Sheriff’s official mobile app advertises access to inmate search and inmate services. The Sheriff’s Corrections section also provides jail contacts, visitation information and custody-related resources.

Physical location: 205 E. Crosier Street
Akron, OH 44311
Corrections automated line: 330-643-2171
Corrections registrar: 330-643-2200

How to check custody and court information

  1. Start with the Sheriff’s custody resources

Use the official inmate search service, available jail information or Corrections contact numbers.

  2. Check the correct person’s identity

Compare the information provided by the system or jail staff.

  3. Ask whether the person is still in county custody

Release or transfer to another correctional agency can change the result.

  4. Locate the criminal court case

Use the Common Pleas or municipal court record system for criminal charges, hearings and outcomes.

  5. Verify court dates through the Clerk

The Sheriff’s Corrections FAQs direct court-date and bond questions to the Clerk of the court handling the case.

Warrant questions: The Sheriff’s Corrections FAQs direct inquiries about possible warrants to its Warrant Division at 330-643-2108, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. A negative online court search is not a reliable warrant clearance.

Statewide Ohio criminal-history records

Ohio BCI Criminal Background Checks for Summit County

If you need your own official Ohio criminal-history record, use the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) instructions.

The Ohio Attorney General explains that computerized BCI criminal-history records are not unrestricted public records. Individuals may request their own records for review, but the request involves identity verification and fingerprints.

How to request your own Ohio BCI record

  1. Read the Ohio Attorney General’s instructions

Use the personal criminal-history request procedure, not a commercial people-search service.

  2. Prepare identifying information

Provide your complete name, current address and other identification details required by BCI.

  3. Arrange fingerprint submission

BCI requires a complete set of fingerprints. Electronic submission is available through qualifying WebCheck providers.

  4. Provide the required signed consent

Follow the current BCI personal-review authorization and consent instructions.

  5. Pay the state fee

The Ohio Attorney General lists a $22 BCI personal criminal-record review charge. A fingerprint collection provider may charge an additional convenience or service fee.

  6. Review the result for accuracy

If a charge, disposition or identity entry is incorrect, use the BCI challenge instructions and obtain supporting information from the originating court or reporting agency.

BCI fee versus county fingerprint services

The Summit County Clerk’s Criminal Division separately publishes these fingerprint-related service fees:

  • BCI fingerprint background check: $32
  • FBI fingerprint background check: $34
  • Combined BCI/FBI check: $60

These county-listed service charges are not the same as the Attorney General’s direct $22 personal-review charge. Confirm which authorized process your employer, licensing agency or personal record request actually requires before paying.

Public county cases versus Ohio BCI: A court name search can identify particular public criminal proceedings. A BCI personal record review is fingerprint-based and subject to separate access rules. Neither should automatically be substituted for an employer-authorized background check.

Ohio state corrections records

Ohio State Prison and Offender Records Search

If a person was sentenced to an Ohio state correctional facility, use the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) offender search.

The public service includes information for qualifying individuals incarcerated in Ohio prisons, currently under department supervision or judicially released.

Useful search fields

The official ODRC application supports searches using a first or last name, offender number and other filters.

One especially useful feature is County of Commitment. Selecting Summit County can help locate available state offender records associated with convictions originating in Summit County.

The tool also has filters for incarceration status, supervision status and other conditions.

County of Commitment is not residential county. The ODRC explains that the county responsible for a prison commitment may differ from the person’s residence. For cases involving multiple committing counties, the reported commitment county may not reflect every conviction.

The state offender search is not a complete list of county jail inmates, unconvicted defendants or everyone who has ever had a criminal case in Ohio.

Barberton and Stow Municipal Courts maintain their own fees and records-request procedures. Check their official websites before ordering copies.

Payment security: Summit County’s Clerk has specifically warned that its official record-search service does not redirect visitors to third-party sites to obtain results and that the Clerk does not currently accept online payments of any kind through its office. Do not mistake court fines, bonds, e-filing payments or an unrelated records vendor for an official criminal record-copy payment.

Cases that continue after judgment

Summit County Criminal Appeals and the Ninth District Court

A felony conviction or other appealable criminal order may be challenged through Ohio’s appellate court system.

Summit County is within the Ninth District Court of Appeals, which also covers Medina, Wayne and Lorain counties.

The Summit County Clerk maintains Ninth District appeals filed in Summit County. Appeals originating in the other counties are filed with their corresponding county clerks.

How to trace an appeal

  1. Find the original criminal judgment

Start with the Common Pleas or municipal court docket and record the final order and original case number.

  2. Check the appellate case records

Use the Court of Appeals option on the Summit County Clerk’s public records portal.

  3. Identify the related appeal

Compare party names, case numbers and lower-court information.

  4. Read the appellate disposition

An appeal can affirm, reverse, modify or remand a judgment. The initial criminal judgment may not represent the final procedural history.

Why this matters: Someone researching a conviction years after sentencing should check whether later appellate orders or Common Pleas proceedings changed the outcome.

Court record restrictions

Summit County Criminal Record Sealing and Expungement

Ohio law permits eligible criminal records to be sealed or expunged under specific circumstances. These are separate legal remedies, and not every offense qualifies.

Summit County’s Criminal Division publishes its own sealing and expungement forms and a $50 filing charge for the listed process.

What to check before filing

  • Whether the original case was in Common Pleas or a municipal court
  • Whether the case ended in conviction, dismissal or another disposition
  • Whether the offense is eligible under current Ohio law
  • Whether any required waiting period has elapsed
  • Whether all relevant court conditions have been completed
  • Whether pending criminal cases or other convictions affect eligibility

The Clerk also explains that its process includes review by the Probation Department and may involve a hearing.

Do not search around sealed records: A properly sealed or expunged record may not appear in a public case portal. Its absence does not authorize someone to bypass statutory access restrictions.

Practical problems and solutions

Why Can’t I Find a Summit County Criminal Record?

Search problem Possible reason Recommended next step
Felony not found in the county Clerk portal Case may still be in municipal court or filed under different details Check Akron, Barberton or Stow municipal records and verify whether an indictment exists.
Misdemeanor missing from Common Pleas search Most misdemeanor cases belong to a municipal or Mayor’s Court Identify the court serving the location of the offense.
Akron case search behaves differently from older instructions Akron adopted a new case-management system in September 2025 Use the current Tyler public portal linked from akronmunicipalcourt.org.
Old Common Pleas case not fully available Older files may be indexed without complete digital documents Use the Clerk’s pre-2002 public-record request process.
Old Barberton record missing Older records may precede CaseLook coverage Request pre-1996 records directly from Barberton’s Clerk.
Public portal session expired Automatic session termination Return to the Clerk’s official homepage and start a new search.
Sheriff arrest report but no conviction An arrest or report does not establish a guilty outcome Search the originating court for the disposition.
BCI record differs from court judgment Reporting error, missing disposition or later case action Obtain certified court documents and use BCI’s correction guidance.
Record unavailable due to sealing Court order or statutory confidentiality Use lawful authorized access procedures, if eligible.
Search result redirects to a paid third-party directory Possible unauthorized lookalike website Return to clerkweb.summitoh.net and verify the county’s official search URL.
No results is not proof of no criminal history. A public court search may not cover another court, an earlier proceeding, restricted records or a separate state criminal-history repository.
