Tennessee criminal court cases and official public records

Tennessee Criminal Records Search: Find Court Cases, Arrest Records & Public Dockets

To search Tennessee criminal records, start with the criminal court clerk in the county where the case was filed. Tennessee does not provide one public online case search covering every criminal trial court in all 95 counties.

If you need an official statewide Tennessee criminal-history report instead of one court case, use the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). Its TORIS system provides name-based Tennessee criminal-history checks for $29 per request.

95 counties Criminal trial court records are maintained by the appropriate local court clerks.
$29 TBI check Official name-based Tennessee criminal-history request through TORIS.
Free FOIL search State corrections information for qualifying Tennessee felony offenders.
Independent publication: CriminalCourtRecord.org is not affiliated with the Tennessee Judicial Branch, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Department of Correction, any county court clerk or law-enforcement agency. This page explains official public-record searches but does not conduct background checks or issue certified records.

Quick answer

Where Can You Search Tennessee Criminal Records Online?

Tennessee criminal records are divided among trial courts, the appellate courts, the TBI criminal-history repository and correctional agencies. Choosing the correct source will save time and help prevent misleading results.

Record you need Official source What it provides
Felony prosecution or criminal trial County Criminal Court or Circuit Court Clerk Public case information, docket events and court documents where available
Misdemeanor or preliminary felony hearing General Sessions Criminal Court Clerk Initial proceedings, charges, hearing dates and applicable misdemeanor dispositions
Municipal ordinance or city traffic matter Municipal or City Court Clerk City-level court records within that court’s jurisdiction
Tennessee criminal appeal Tennessee Public Case History Supreme Court and appellate case history, filings and opinions
Statewide Tennessee criminal-history check TBI TORIS Name-based Tennessee criminal-history report
State felony offender information TDOC Felony Offender Information Lookup Qualifying incarceration, probation, parole and sentence information
Current county jail custody or booking Relevant County Sheriff’s Office Locally maintained jail or booking information
Tennessee sex offender registration TBI Sex Offender Registry Public registration information for qualifying registrants
Federal criminal prosecution in Tennessee PACER Federal district court case dockets and public documents
Most useful starting point: If you know the county and criminal case number, search the local court first. If you only need an official Tennessee-wide name-based criminal-history report, TORIS may be more appropriate. These services are not interchangeable.

Tennessee-specific court structure

Which Tennessee Court Handles Felony and Misdemeanor Records?

Tennessee’s criminal justice system includes Criminal Courts, Circuit Courts exercising criminal jurisdiction, General Sessions Courts and Municipal Courts. The responsible record office depends on the court where the proceeding occurred.

Criminal Courts and Circuit Courts

Criminal Courts and Circuit Courts exercising criminal jurisdiction handle felony prosecutions, trials, sentencing and other criminal proceedings within their jurisdiction.

For an indictment, felony judgment, sentencing order or post-conviction proceeding, begin with the Criminal Court or Circuit Court Clerk named on the paperwork.

General Sessions Courts

General Sessions Courts commonly handle misdemeanors, criminal traffic matters and preliminary felony proceedings.

A felony case may begin in General Sessions before proceeding to a grand jury and Criminal Court. These stages may have different docket numbers.

Municipal Courts

Municipal Courts handle specified city ordinance and traffic matters. Some municipal judges exercise additional General Sessions jurisdiction where authorized.

A citation issued by a city police officer does not automatically mean the case is filed in the county Criminal Court.

Appellate Courts

The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals reviews criminal matters within its jurisdiction. Certain cases may subsequently reach the Tennessee Supreme Court.

Those courts use the statewide Public Case History system, which is separate from local trial-court search portals.

Why searching two courts may be necessary

Consider a felony charge that begins in General Sessions Court. The preliminary hearing may appear in that court’s docket, while the later indictment, guilty plea, trial or sentence is recorded in Criminal Court.

If the General Sessions docket shows a bind-over or grand jury-related disposition, check the criminal trial court for subsequent proceedings before concluding that the entire case ended.

Important: A General Sessions dismissal, bond-setting event or preliminary proceeding must not be automatically described as the final outcome of a later felony prosecution. Always check the court and the specific charge disposition.

County-by-county public case access

Tennessee Criminal Records by County: Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga

Tennessee counties use different online court systems. The following examples explain how to search several of the state’s busiest criminal jurisdictions and identify important record-coverage limitations.

Davidson County — Nashville

Davidson County Criminal Court Records Search

The Criminal Court Clerk of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County provides a free online criminal case-information search.

The public application supports searches using available defendant information and can display recorded charges, case details and dispositions.

How to search

  1. Open the official Criminal Court Clerk search application.
  2. Select the available search type.
  3. Enter the person’s first and last name or other supported search details.
  4. Use accurate name spelling and available identifying information.
  5. Review matching records and their case dispositions.
  6. Contact the Clerk when older records or certified documents are required.

Important Davidson County record dates

Record category Published coverage information
General Sessions disposition data Beginning January 11, 2000, in the newer CJIS data category
State trial court disposition data Beginning July 11, 2000, in the newer CJIS data category
Legacy records Records posted from 1980 through the transition into the newer data categories
Pre-1980 records Contact the Criminal Court Clerk for assistance

The clerk’s search disclaimer also states that names may reflect the spelling supplied by the arresting or booking agency. Incorrect spelling in the original record can therefore affect search results.

Nashville-specific tip: If a public case search omits the person’s date of birth or produces an uncertain identity match, the Clerk recommends verification through the office before using the record for an official purpose.

Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk:
408 2nd Avenue North, Suite 2120, Nashville, Tennessee
Phone: 615-862-5601

The Clerk provides free public record inspection during regular office hours. Certified copies are available for a separate charge.

Shelby County — Memphis

Shelby County Tennessee Criminal Court Case Search

Shelby County Criminal Court uses the Shelby County Criminal Justice System (CJS) portal for online criminal case information.

The Criminal Court Clerk’s official instructions say users must register and sign in to the CJS portal when searching for their case information.

Shelby County Criminal Court and CJS Portal

How to search Shelby County criminal records

  1. Open the official Shelby County Criminal Court page.
  2. Follow the link to the Criminal Justice System portal.
  3. Register or sign in according to the portal’s instructions.
  4. Choose the available Smart Search option.
  5. Enter the criminal case number or supported party information.
  6. Review the matching criminal case and case history.
  7. Contact the Criminal Court Clerk for documents or certified dispositions.

Shelby County criminal case-number formats

Shelby County has an important numbering distinction based on when the criminal case was created.

Case period Published format What it means
Created before November 5, 2016 15 00000-12345678 Indictment number and booking number separated by a dash
Created after November 5, 2016 C2300001 Uppercase C, two-digit year and five-digit sequence

For older cases, preserving the indictment and booking number can make the search easier. Do not assume the newer C-number format applies to every historical Shelby County prosecution.

Payment is separate from record research: Shelby County also offers online criminal court payments. Do not use a payment transaction as a substitute for checking the case’s status, disposition or legal options.

Knox County — Knoxville

Knox County Criminal Records, Dockets and Local Background Searches

The Knox County Criminal Court Clerk maintains records for Criminal Court, General Sessions Criminal Court and Fourth Circuit Court.

The office provides an online searchable docket system for criminal, traffic and county ordinance court schedules.

Knox County Criminal Court Docket Search

Find a Knox County criminal court date

  1. Open the official Knox County docket-search page.
  2. Select a date range.
  3. Enter a first and last name or choose a court division.
  4. Submit the search to view matching court settings.
  5. Verify the hearing through the Clerk or assigned court when necessary.

The docket tool focuses on scheduled proceedings. It should not be treated as a complete statewide criminal-history search.

Knox County local criminal background search

Knox County’s Criminal Court Clerk separately advertises a $15 local criminal-history search package. The published package includes specified name, alias and identifying-information searches, with additional alias searches at $5 each.

This is a Knox County clerk service—not a statewide TBI criminal-history report.

Hamilton County — Chattanooga

Hamilton County Criminal Court Dockets and Dispositions

Hamilton County provides separate online pages for General Sessions Criminal Court and Criminal Court.

General Sessions handles misdemeanor matters and preliminary felony proceedings. Criminal Court handles cases following indictment, presentment, information or qualifying lower-court appeals.

Hamilton County Criminal Court Dockets

What is available online?

Hamilton County publishes several criminal docket resources, including:

  • Weekly trial docket schedules
  • Arraignment dockets
  • Criminal Court dispositions and dates
  • Scheduling dockets
  • Grand jury true bill and no bill lists
  • Bond-related docket information

The county warns that online docket postings are for informational purposes. Changes made to the original docket may not appear in the online copy.

Its Criminal Court docket page states that dockets are updated on Thursdays for the following week, with the weekly master docket updated on Mondays.

Chattanooga-specific warning: Hamilton County’s separate Tennessee Case Finder information page describes Circuit Court and General Sessions Civil data. Do not mistake that civil records service for the Criminal Court docket search.

What about other Tennessee counties?

For Rutherford County (Murfreesboro), Williamson County (Franklin), Montgomery County (Clarksville), Sumner County (Gallatin), Sullivan County (Kingsport and Bristol) or another county, begin with the official Tennessee court-clerk directory.

Select the filing county and confirm whether the records are maintained by a Criminal Court Clerk, Circuit Court Clerk, General Sessions Clerk or Municipal Court Clerk.

Statewide appellate records

Tennessee Public Case History: Search Criminal Appeals and Appellate Dockets

The Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts operates a statewide Public Case History system for proceedings before the Tennessee Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and Court of Criminal Appeals.

This is not a statewide search of every county’s criminal trial court cases.

Official Tennessee Appellate Case Search

Search Tennessee Appellate Cases

How to search an appellate case

  1. Open Tennessee Public Case History

Use the official Tennessee Judicial Branch appellate case portal.

  2. Choose the available search field

Options include Case Number, Case Style, Party Name and Business/Organization.

  3. Enter the appellate case information

Use the complete appellate docket number when known, or search by a party name.

  4. Review the matching appellate case

Inspect its procedural history, docket events and publicly accessible filings.

  5. Check the published opinions and orders

Available documents may include motions, judgments, orders and appellate opinions.

  6. Find the original trial court case separately

Use the trial county and court information to locate the underlying criminal record with the correct Clerk.

What documents are available?

The Tennessee Judicial Branch explains that motions, orders, judgments and opinions filed in the appellate courts after August 26, 2013 are generally linked through Public Case History when publicly available.

Historical documents and restricted filings may require additional research through the Appellate Court Clerk.

Do not confuse an appeal with a conviction: An appellate docket may discuss a trial court’s conviction, reversal, remand or other ruling. Always distinguish the appellate outcome from the original criminal charge and judgment.

Tennessee TBI Criminal Background Check: TORIS Search, Fees and Limitations

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation maintains the state’s central criminal-history repository. For the general public, it offers a Tennessee-only name-based criminal-history search through Tennessee Open Records Information Services, commonly called TORIS.

TBI Tennessee Open Records Information Services

The TBI states that the general public may request a Tennessee adult criminal-history record on an individual. The ordinary public TORIS search does not require fingerprints.

How much does a Tennessee TBI background check cost?

Background-check service Published fee Requirements and scope
Tennessee-only general public name search $29 TORIS; fingerprints not required
General public FBI-only background check $50 Fingerprint-based request through the designated provider
Qualified organization, Tennessee and FBI Varies by applicant category Fingerprinting and applicable statutory authorization
County criminal docket lookup Varies by local court A specific court’s publicly accessible case information, not the TORIS report

TBI lists the $29 general public TORIS charge as nonrefundable.

How to request a TORIS report

  1. Open the TBI background check service

Use the official TORIS website or the TBI Background Checks page.

  2. Select the public requester route

Choose the ordinary general public Tennessee-only background-check option rather than a qualified organization or authorized fingerprinting service.

  3. Enter the subject information

Provide the required identifying information accurately. The service performs a name-based search, not a fingerprint comparison.

  4. Review the search scope

Understand that the public TORIS process checks Tennessee criminal-history information and does not produce a complete nationwide history.

  5. Complete payment

Confirm the applicable charge before submitting the request.

  6. Review the electronic response

The report indicates whether a potentially matching Tennessee criminal-history record exists and provides releasable information according to the TBI process.

Name-based search limitation: Tennessee TORIS records are based on information submitted to the state repository, including fingerprint-supported arrest records. However, the public search itself is name-based, so an apparent match does not conclusively establish identity. The report also may not include every municipal citation, federal case or criminal incident.

Correctional records

Tennessee Felony Offender Information Lookup (FOIL)

The Tennessee Department of Correction provides a free Felony Offender Information Lookup, or FOIL, for qualifying people who are or have been in TDOC custody or supervision.

FOIL should not be confused with either a criminal court docket search or a full TBI criminal-history background report.

Official Tennessee FOIL Search

How to search Tennessee offender records

  1. Open the official FOIL website.
  2. Choose Search by Name, TDOC ID or State ID.
  3. Enter the available identifying information.
  4. Choose alias matching when appropriate.
  5. Complete the verification challenge.
  6. Review the matching offender information carefully.

What can FOIL show?

Depending on the available record, FOIL may provide:

  • Offender name and corrections identification number
  • Photo and available identifying information
  • Incarceration, probation or parole status
  • Location or supervision information
  • Sentence and offense information
  • Reported parole eligibility or release information

The Department of Correction warns that some information originates from other Tennessee jurisdictions and should be confirmed with the originating agency when necessary.

Useful distinction: A person arrested yesterday and held in a county jail may not appear in FOIL. For current local jail bookings, use the relevant County Sheriff’s Office rather than assuming FOIL covers every detainee.

Specialized public safety information

Tennessee Sex Offender Registry and Other Public Registries

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation operates a public sex offender registry. Registered offender profiles may include names, photographs, registered addresses and offense-related information, subject to applicable law and agency reporting.

TBI Sex Offender Registry

Open Tennessee Sex Offender Search

Registry information is not a complete list of criminal convictions. Some crimes do not require registration, while certain registration obligations may relate to convictions from another jurisdiction.

TBI explains that local registering agencies are responsible for maintaining relevant registration information. The public registry should not be used to harass, threaten, stalk or unlawfully target individuals.

The TBI also provides other specialized public registries, including drug offender and persistent domestic violence offender information, through its official government website.

Court-certified judgments and dispositions

How to Obtain Certified Tennessee Criminal Court Records

For a certified judgment, dismissal, sentencing order or criminal court docket, request the record directly from the Clerk of the court that handled the prosecution.

  1. Find the original case number

Use the local public search or contact the Clerk for help identifying the case.

  2. Confirm the court and county

A General Sessions proceeding and a later Criminal Court prosecution may have separate numbers or files.

  3. Choose the exact document

Ask for the judgment, sentencing order, final disposition, dismissal order or another particular filing.

  4. Check public access

Ask whether the record is publicly available, sealed, expunged, confidential or located in an archive.

  5. Request certification

If the record must be used officially, specify that a certified copy is required rather than an ordinary photocopy or docket printout.

  6. Confirm copying fees and delivery

Ask about per-page charges, certification, mail delivery and accepted payment methods.

Tennessee criminal record copying fees

The Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk and Knox County Criminal Court Clerk publish the following charges for ordinary public court-document copying services:

Service Published charge Notes
Public inspection at Davidson County Clerk’s office Free Publicly available records during regular office hours
Hard-copy document $0.50 per page Published by Davidson and Knox Criminal Court Clerks
Document certification $5 additional Certification charge in addition to copies
Knox County electronic copies Generally no charge Additional charge may apply to unusually large requests
Other county copying and archive services Confirm locally Procedures and applicable costs may differ

Using the two clerks’ published standard charges, a certified four-page paper document would have a base price of $7: four pages at $0.50 each plus $5 certification. Postage or other applicable services are not included.

Restricted and cleared criminal records

Tennessee Expungement: Why a Criminal Record May Be Missing

Tennessee permits expungement of qualifying criminal records under Tenn. Code Ann. § 40-32-101.

Depending on the statutory provision and case disposition, eligible records may involve:

  • Dismissed criminal charges
  • Charges resulting in a not-guilty verdict
  • Cases in which the grand jury returned no true bill
  • Qualifying diversion dispositions
  • Other specified nonconviction circumstances
  • Selected misdemeanor or felony convictions that satisfy statutory conditions

Eligibility for expungement of a conviction is more restrictive than eligibility for many nonconviction dispositions. The offense, full criminal history, sentence completion and other statutory requirements must be examined.

An expunged charge may no longer appear in a public county search, and Tennessee law restricts unlawful disclosure of expunged criminal-history information.

Tennessee Court Expungement Information

Use the official Tennessee court resources or the Clerk of the court that handled the original case to determine the correct procedure and available forms.

Find Tennessee Expungement Resources
Do not assume a missing case means an expungement was granted. A record may instead be archived, recorded under another name, held by another court, excluded from online coverage or subject to a different confidentiality rule.

Why Can’t I Find Tennessee Criminal Records Online?

A missing case result does not automatically establish that a person has never been arrested, charged or convicted.

Problem Possible explanation Recommended next action
No county criminal case appears Wrong county, court or name spelling Confirm the filing court and retry using the complete case number
General Sessions case exists but later felony outcome is unclear Matter may have moved to grand jury and Criminal Court Search the appropriate felony trial court docket
Davidson County older record missing Online legacy coverage generally begins in 1980 Contact the Criminal Court Clerk for older files

Record was expunged or restricted Tennessee law or a court order limits public disclosure Contact the official custodian about lawful access

How to interpret a Tennessee criminal case outcome

A criminal docket can contain several legally different events. Make sure you understand what each event actually means.

Not proof of conviction

  • Arrest
  • Initial charge
  • Booking
  • Arraignment
  • Preliminary hearing
  • Bond setting
  • Grand jury investigation

Events requiring careful review

  • Guilty plea
  • Acquittal
  • Dismissal
  • Nolle prosequi
  • Conviction
  • Sentence
  • Appeal or later court order
For official purposes: Use the final court disposition rather than inferring the result from an initial charge, a bond entry or a jail record. If the court’s public summary is unclear, request the actual judgment or order.

Frequently asked questions

Tennessee Criminal Records Search FAQs

1. How do I search Tennessee criminal records online for free?

Start with the criminal court clerk in the county where the case was filed. Some counties, including Davidson County, provide free public criminal case summaries. Tennessee appellate cases are also searchable through the Judicial Branch’s Public Case History service.

2. Is there a statewide Tennessee criminal court records search?

There is no single public trial-court case-search portal covering every Tennessee county. The statewide Public Case History system covers appellate cases, while county court clerks maintain trial-level criminal records. The TBI provides a separate statewide criminal-history background check.

3. How much does a Tennessee TBI criminal background check cost?

The general public Tennessee-only name-based TORIS background check costs $29 per request. TBI lists that charge as nonrefundable. Other fingerprint-based services have different prices and authorization requirements.

4. Can I search Tennessee criminal records by someone’s name?

Yes, where the relevant county court provides a public name-search option. TORIS also provides a Tennessee name-based criminal-history search for a fee. Verify the person’s identity carefully because names alone are not conclusive.

5. Where do I search Nashville or Davidson County criminal cases?

Use the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk’s free online case-information search. Its published records distinguish newer General Sessions and state trial court disposition data from legacy records, with older pre-1980 requests handled through the office.

6. How do I search Shelby County or Memphis criminal court records?

Use the Shelby County Criminal Justice System portal linked from the Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk’s official website. Registration and sign-in are required for case searching. Older cases may use an indictment-and-booking number format rather than the newer C-number format.

7. Where can I find Tennessee criminal court dates?

Use the assigned county court’s docket or court-calendar service. Knox County and Hamilton County publish specific criminal court docket searches. Confirm the latest setting directly with the court when attendance is required.

8. How do I get certified Tennessee criminal court records?

Request the judgment, dismissal, sentencing order or other specific document from the Clerk of the court where the case was filed. Davidson and Knox County publish standard hard-copy charges of $0.50 per page plus $5 for certification.

9. How do I search Tennessee prison or felony offender records?

Use the Tennessee Department of Correction’s free Felony Offender Information Lookup. FOIL can display qualifying custody, probation, parole, offense and sentence information. County jail detainees may require a separate Sheriff’s Office search.

10. Why is a Tennessee criminal record not showing up online?

The record may be filed in another county or court, use a different name or case number, fall outside the portal’s historical coverage, or be expunged, sealed or otherwise restricted. A missing online result is not proof that no criminal record exists.
