How to Download or Request Certified Leon County Criminal Court Records

Leon County provides more than just a list of criminal cases. The Clerk allows anonymous public users to view, print and download eligible public document images directly from the court docket when those images are available.

This is useful for locating a signed judgment, dismissal, sentence or other available court record without first ordering staff-prepared paper copies.

Option 1: Download an available public document for free

  1. Open the public court search.

Search by name or case number and select the correct criminal case.

  2. Review the progress docket.

Find the filing or order you need.

  3. Look for the available document image.

Where public viewing is permitted, open the image using the portal’s document icon.

  4. Download or print the public copy.

The Clerk allows free self-service viewing, printing and downloading for qualifying images.

Option 2: Request a document without an online image

Not every docket entry has a scanned document. Older records may have no image because the Clerk did not scan records at the time, and some files may have been destroyed according to judicial retention rules.

  1. Find the docket entry.

Locate the document title within the correct case.

  2. Select “Request Document.”

Use the checkbox beside the applicable docket entry where available.

  3. Submit the request.

The Clerk reviews requested documents for proper public access and redaction.

  4. Review the quoted charge.

If staff must retrieve or prepare a document without an available image, statutory copying charges may apply.

  5. Receive the authorized document.

The Clerk can advise on email delivery, pickup or another supported procedure.

The Clerk also has a Records Request route for older cases on microfilm, index cards, CDs, off-site storage and cases requiring additional staff assistance.

Option 3: Purchase an electronically certified record

For eligible case images, Leon County offers eCertify. Unlike an ordinary PDF download, an eCertified record includes an electronic certification that can be verified through the Clerk’s authorized verification service.

  1. Locate the case and document.

Open the available record image through the official public case search.

  2. Select the file icon.

Verify that it is the exact document you need.

  3. Check the document box.

    Select the document for certification.

  4. Choose “Submit ECertify Request.”

Follow the Clerk’s payment and certification process.

  5. Save the certified copy.

Keep the complete electronic certification intact for the recipient.

Useful distinction: Viewing or downloading an eligible public court image can be free. Requesting a specially prepared copy or purchasing a certified document is a different service and may carry charges.

What is Leon County Secure Web?

The Clerk also offers a registered Secure Web service. Depending on the user’s verified role and authorization, registered access may allow additional permitted records and images that are not displayed through anonymous public access.

Criminal cases involving certain sexual offenses or child abuse, juvenile cases and other protected categories may require special authorization. Registration does not automatically permit the general public to view confidential records.

Leon County’s Court Records instructions explain the Secure Web registration and authorized-access process.

Clerk service charges

Leon County Criminal Court Records Fees: Copies, Certification and Searches

Leon County publishes its Clerk service charges under Florida Statutes §28.24. Self-service public viewing is different from a Clerk-assisted records search or document-copy order.

Service Published fee What it covers
Online case search Free Search eligible public case and docket information through the Clerk’s website.
Eligible online document image Free Self-service viewing, printing or downloading when permitted and available.
Staff-assisted records search $2 per year searched Published Clerk search charge for the applicable service.
Standard-size court document copy $1 per page Copying documents no larger than 14 by 8.5 inches.
Oversized document copy $5 per page Larger-format copies under the Clerk’s schedule.
Certification of a document $2 per document Published certification charge; copying or other applicable service charges may be additional.
Exemplified certificate $7 A separate form of court-document authentication.
Emailing court records $1 per page Clerk-assisted emailing where the schedule applies; not a charge for ordinary free self-service downloads.
Criminal record sealing or expungement $66.50 Published Clerk charge associated with criminal sealing or expungement proceedings, separate from FDLE’s eligibility application fee.
Do not add every fee together: The cost depends on the records process requested. A free online PDF, a staff-prepared court copy, an eCertified document, and an extensive archival search are different services. Ask the Clerk for an exact total before authorizing payment.

How to request Sheriff’s arrest or incident reports

A Sheriff’s incident report is different from the criminal case file created after a prosecution is filed in court.

Leon County Sheriff’s Office — Records Management Bureau
3333 West Pensacola Street, Suite 100
Tallahassee, FL 32304
Records telephone: 850-606-3317
Sheriff main telephone: 850-606-3300

Use the official Sheriff’s Records Requests & Background Requests page for records maintained by that agency. Include available incident dates, report numbers and location information.

If the incident was investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department or another agency, request the original police report from that agency rather than assuming the Sheriff’s Office created it.

Important distinction: An arrest can precede a formal criminal filing, and a jail record does not establish a conviction. To determine what happened in court, search the Clerk’s criminal case records and review the final disposition.
Florida statewide criminal history

FDLE Criminal Background Checks vs. Leon County Court Records

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) operates Florida’s central criminal-history repository. It is a separate system from Leon County’s case-search website.

A Leon County court lookup helps establish the history of a particular local prosecution. FDLE searches available statewide repository history under Florida’s access rules.

Search option Cost What it means
Leon County public court lookup Free Search available felony, misdemeanor and criminal traffic cases filed in Leon County.
FDLE Instant Search $25 total $24 public name-based search plus $1 card-processing fee. Immediate, non-certified result.
FDLE staff-processed certified search $24 Certified criminal-history response through FDLE’s separate request process; mailing time additional.
FDLE Personal Review No FDLE fee Fingerprint-supported review of your own Florida criminal history for accuracy; fingerprint collection charges may apply.

How to request a public Florida criminal-history check

  1. Visit FDLE’s official request page.

Open the State of Florida Criminal History Record Check service.

  2. Choose the appropriate service.

For immediate public results, select Instant Search. For a formal certified response, use Certified/Non-Certified Search.

  3. Enter identifying information.

Follow FDLE’s secure official application instructions.

  4. Confirm the charge.

The ordinary instant public check is $24 plus a $1 processing fee.

  5. Review the returned information.

Verify the identity and reported outcome carefully. A public FDLE search is not automatically a complete nationwide background check.

Florida-specific point: FDLE’s no-fee Personal Review is intended to help a person inspect and challenge their own criminal-history information. FDLE says it cannot replace a certified check needed for immigration, licensing, employment or other formal purposes.

Leon County criminal cases vs. nearby Florida counties

The Second Judicial Circuit serves Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla, Jefferson, Franklin and Liberty Counties. A case prosecuted in one of those counties generally belongs to that county’s Clerk of Court even if an involved person lives, works or studies in Tallahassee.

For a case originating outside Leon County, identify the filing county from the charging document or case notice and search the appropriate county Clerk.

Understand the outcome

How to Read a Leon County Criminal Docket and Final Disposition

Criminal case dockets can contain entries describing different stages of the prosecution. A filed criminal charge is an allegation; the final court disposition tells you how the charge was resolved.

Docket term What it commonly indicates What to check
Arraignment A formal proceeding involving criminal charges and a plea. Review later plea, motion, trial and disposition entries.
Information filed The prosecution filed a charging document. A filed charge does not establish guilt.
Nolle prosequi The prosecutor declined to continue specified charges. Determine which counts were affected and whether the case is concluded.
Adjudication withheld A distinct Florida court disposition where the court withholds formal adjudication under applicable requirements. Legal consequences depend on the offense and purpose of the inquiry.
Adjudicated guilty The court formally adjudicated guilt. Read the judgment, counts, sentence and later case events.
Acquitted / not guilty A not-guilty outcome for specified counts. Verify every charge and the final written disposition.
Case closed An administrative status. Closed alone does not establish conviction, dismissal or innocence.
Why certified documents matter: A name, arrest date or initial charge can be misleading without the final court order. If the result will be used for a legal proceeding or record correction, obtain the specific certified disposition from the Clerk.
Florida criminal record relief

Leon County Criminal Record Sealing and Expungement

Florida offers statutory procedures to seal or expunge certain qualifying criminal-history records. Eligibility depends on the offense, criminal history, disposition and other legal requirements.

For ordinary court-ordered sealing or expungement under Florida Statutes §§943.059 and 943.0585, obtaining an FDLE Certificate of Eligibility is generally the first step. The certificate alone does not seal or expunge a record.

Steps to start a Leon County seal or expunge request

  1. Find the original criminal case.

Search the Leon County Clerk’s docket and identify every relevant arrest or case number.

  2. Obtain the certified disposition.

FDLE generally requires a certified disposition for each listed charge or case. Obtain this through the Clerk’s official document process.

  3. Review FDLE eligibility requirements.

Check the statutory restrictions and determine whether sealing or expungement may be available.

  4. Complete the FDLE Certificate of Eligibility application.

Follow the official application instructions, including notarization, authorized fingerprints and required supporting documents.

  5. Include the FDLE fee.

FDLE publishes a nonrefundable $75 Certificate of Eligibility application fee.

  6. Wait for FDLE’s eligibility determination.

FDLE says processing commonly takes approximately 12 weeks after receipt of a complete packet, though actual timing may vary.

  7. File the appropriate court petition if eligible.

Use the applicable Leon County Court and Clerk forms, paying any required filing or service charges.

  8. Preserve the final signed order.

If the court grants relief, keep the official order and follow the legally required agency-notification procedure.

Cost distinction: Leon County lists a $66.50 Clerk charge associated with criminal sealing/expungement. FDLE’s separate $75 eligibility application fee is not included in that amount. Other costs can apply depending on the individual procedure.

Do not assume that a dropped or dismissed charge disappears automatically from every criminal-history system. A court dismissal and statutory sealing or expungement are different events.

How to correct inaccurate Leon County criminal-history information

Leon County Criminal Case Fines, Costs and Payment Records

Some people searching criminal dockets need to confirm whether court costs or fines remain outstanding. Leon County has a separate Court-Ordered Payments Program for criminal case financial obligations.

The Clerk publishes information on court-cost payment arrangements and offers resources for reviewing applicable balances.

Its standard installment arrangements are described as $50 monthly for qualifying misdemeanor and traffic cases and $75 monthly for felony cases, with applicable fees and any court-approved variations. These are payment-plan terms, not universal penalties for a criminal conviction.
