Washington State Criminal Records Search: Court Cases, WATCH Background Checks & Public Records

To search Washington State criminal records, start with the Washington Courts case search for court filings or use Washington State Patrol’s WATCH system for an official state criminal-history report.

Washington does not have one public website containing every criminal case, arrest, background check and correctional record. Superior Court records, District and Municipal Court cases, State Patrol criminal-history data and federal prosecutions use different systems.

Official Washington and federal sources reviewed: October 16, 2026
Independent public-information website: CriminalCourtRecord.org is not affiliated with Washington State Courts, Washington State Patrol, the Department of Corrections, any county court or law-enforcement agency. This site does not perform criminal background checks, certify records, provide legal advice or operate as a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA.

Where to Search Washington Criminal Records

If you only have a person’s name, begin with the public Washington Courts case search. If you require an official background-check response, use WATCH. For complete dockets, court orders or judgments, consult the court maintaining the original case.

Public case records

Agency: Washington Administrative Office of the Courts

Search case indexes across Superior, District, Municipal and appellate courts, subject to coverage and access limits.

Agency: Washington Department of Corrections

Washington Courts’ own limitation: Its statewide search does not establish the outcome of a case or someone’s complete criminal record. Verify the outcome through the local or appellate court record, and request criminal-history information from Washington State Patrol.

Washington State Patrol WATCH Criminal Background Checks

WATCH means Washington Access to Criminal History. It is the official Washington State Patrol internet service for public Washington criminal-history record checks.

WATCH can report public conviction history, arrests less than one year old when dispositions are pending, and qualifying registered sex/kidnapping offender information. Nonconviction records outside permitted public-release categories are restricted.

$11

Online WATCH

Per name-and-date-of-birth criminal-history search.

$32

Mail or in-person

Name-based conviction criminal-history request.

$58

Fingerprint request

Fingerprint-based criminal-history processing.

Extra service: Washington State Patrol lists an additional $15 charge for an optional notarized letter. WATCH responses are ordinarily returned immediately for successful online searches.

How to submit a WATCH online criminal-history request

  1. Open the official WATCH website.

Use watch.wsp.wa.gov rather than an advertisement promising nationwide background checks.

  2. Read the disclosure and terms.

The website explains what types of criminal-history information may be released and the limits of name-based searches.

  3. Choose the public search and payment process.

A public requester can use the credit/debit card option. Established organizations may have approved billing or nonprofit accounts.

  4. Enter the identifying details.

Use the person’s complete legal name and date of birth. Names, former names and dates of birth can materially affect results.

  5. Pay the $11 online fee.

The fee applies per search even when no matching record is returned.

  6. Read and save the result.

Review the returned record carefully. If identity is uncertain, use the fingerprint-verification process described by WSP.

Identity warning: WSP explains that name-and-date-of-birth results cannot positively establish a person’s identity. Fingerprint comparison is needed for positive verification. WATCH does not provide a nationwide background check.

Washington Criminal-History Checks by Mail or in Person

If an online WATCH search does not meet your requirements, the Washington State Patrol accepts name-based and fingerprint-based criminal-history requests through its formal process.

Mail a name-based request

Complete the WSP Request for Conviction Criminal History form, include the necessary identifiers and applicable $32 processing fee, and mail it according to the official instructions.

Mailing address:
Washington State Patrol
Identification and Background Check Section
PO Box 42633
Olympia, WA 98504-2633

Visit or submit fingerprints

WSP also provides an in-person request route in Olympia. Fingerprint-based processing costs $58, and current fingerprint-service rules should be checked before visiting.

Olympia office:
106 11th Avenue SW, Suite 1300
Olympia, WA 98501

WSP Criminal Records: (360) 534-2000

Public-record restrictions: Not everyone is entitled to receive every arrest or nonconviction record. WSP applies Washington’s Criminal Records Privacy Act and related legal restrictions when releasing criminal-history information.

Washington County Criminal Court Records: Odyssey, King County and Pierce County

Washington’s public Superior Court access is not completely uniform. Although the statewide index helps locate case information, the authoritative and most current detailed case records may be maintained in different county systems.

Participating Superior Courts

Odyssey Portal

Use Odyssey for participating Washington Superior Courts outside King and Pierce counties. Anonymous access offers case information, while court-document access can require an approved account and county-clerk authorization.

King County Superior Court

King County Superior Court uses its own Clerk records portal. Start from the official King County records page for current cases, documents and access instructions.

Pierce County LINX

Pierce County Superior Court uses the Legal Information Network Exchange (LINX). It provides case and calendar resources and is maintained separately from Odyssey.

King County District Court

King County District Court has a distinct public portal for qualifying district-court cases. Do not confuse it with the King County Superior Court Clerk’s portal.

Open District Court Portal ↗

How to choose the correct Superior Court portal

  1. Find the filing county.

Use the statewide Case Records Search or a known case number, charge document or court notice.

  2. Determine the court level.

For a Superior Court case in a participating county, use Odyssey. For King or Pierce County, use the corresponding county portal.

  3. Search the case.

Use the portal’s party-name or case-number options. Compare multiple fields to reduce false matches.

  4. Check document access requirements.

Anonymous Odyssey users cannot access court documents. For filings, certified copies or restricted access, contact the county clerk.

Odyssey exclusion: The Washington Courts Odyssey guidance confirms that King County Superior Court, Pierce County Superior Court and courts of limited jurisdiction are not accessible through the Superior Court Odyssey Portal.

Superior Court vs. District Court vs. Municipal Court Criminal Records

Choosing the correct court matters because the same person’s criminal history may involve multiple court levels or counties.

Superior Court

Washington Superior Courts hear felony prosecutions and other matters within their jurisdiction. Start with the correct Superior Court county system for case records.

District Court

District Courts commonly handle misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, traffic matters and qualifying limited-jurisdiction proceedings.

Municipal Court

Municipal Courts hear qualifying city ordinance, traffic and criminal matters. The city court maintains the authoritative case record.

Practical example: A misdemeanor case may be filed in a District or Municipal Court, while a separate felony prosecution involving the same person could be in Superior Court. Searching only Odyssey may miss the limited-jurisdiction case.

How to Request Washington Criminal Court Documents and Certified Copies

The statewide court search is an index rather than a replacement for the complete court file. Washington Courts directs users to the court in which the case was filed to inspect the maintained record or obtain document copies.

  1. Find the court and case number.

Use the statewide index, Odyssey, LINX or the appropriate county portal.

  2. Identify the precise record.

Examples include the judgment and sentence, disposition, final order, case docket or particular motion.

  3. Contact the official clerk.

Use the Washington Courts directory or the court’s official website. Explain whether you need a regular copy or a certified document.

  4. Ask about fees and delivery.

Some courts support online document requests, while others require email, mail or an in-person request. Fees and availability vary.

  5. Verify final case status.

Check whether there were later orders, amended judgments, appeals or other actions that affect the result.

When you need proof of disposition: Request the judgment, sentence or other final case record from the maintaining court rather than relying on the statewide case index alone.

Washington Department of Corrections Incarcerated Person Search

The Washington Department of Corrections provides an official public search for people currently incarcerated in the state correctional system.

It supports searching by first name, last name or DOC number, with results that may identify the person, age, DOC number and correctional location.

  1. Open the official DOC incarcerated search.

Use the Washington DOC website, not an unrelated arrest-record aggregator.

  2. Enter a name or DOC number.

Search with the identifier you have. Name searches can return multiple people.

  3. Compare the result.

Check the DOC number, age and facility location before assuming the result belongs to the person you are researching.

  4. Use the proper agency for additional information.

For previous custody, release, supervision or case-disposition questions, contact DOC or the sentencing court as appropriate.

Not a statewide jail roster: The DOC incarcerated search does not replace all county jail booking databases. For local jail information, check the relevant county sheriff or jail authority.

Washington State Sex Offender Registry Search

The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs provides an official entry point to the Washington Sex Offender Public Registry. Registry searches are separate from court case searches and criminal-history checks.

What you can search

  • Publicly available registered offender information
  • Names and geographic areas
  • Information provided by participating law-enforcement agencies
  • Public notification resources where offered

What the registry does not establish

  • Every criminal conviction
  • A complete Washington criminal-history report
  • All past arrests and charges
  • Certified court dispositions
Important: A registry record does not authorize harassment, threats or misuse of personal information. Follow the registry’s published restrictions and applicable law.

How to Search Federal Criminal Cases in Washington

Federal criminal cases filed in Washington are maintained separately from the state’s Superior, District and Municipal Courts.

Washington has federal District Courts for the Western District of Washington and Eastern District of Washington. The federal PACER system provides docket searches and available federal court documents.

  1. Open PACER Find a Case.

Access the federal judiciary’s official PACER website and review account and fee requirements.

  2. Choose the federal court.

Search the Western or Eastern District of Washington when you know where the federal case was filed.

  3. Use PACER Case Locator if uncertain.

The national locator helps identify the federal court associated with the case.

  4. Review the docket and final status.

Check the court, case number, charges, available filings, judgment and later proceedings.

Fee note: PACER waives ordinary usage charges when a user’s quarterly total is $30 or less, subject to the current terms. State court searches and PACER searches are separate.

Why Washington Criminal Record Searches Sometimes Show No Results

Problem Possible reason Best next step
Statewide case search shows no case Wrong name, court, filing location, indexing delay or restricted record Confirm identifiers and search the maintaining court directly.
King County case missing in Odyssey King County Superior Court uses a separate portal Use King County Clerk’s official records portal.
Pierce County case missing in Odyssey Pierce County Superior Court uses LINX Use Pierce County LINX.
District or Municipal Court missing in Odyssey Odyssey is for participating Superior Courts Use the applicable limited-jurisdiction court search or contact the court.
Search returns case but no final outcome Statewide index is not the full official docket Request the maintained court record or final disposition.
WATCH returns an uncertain match Name and DOB may not positively establish identity Follow WSP fingerprint-verification instructions.
State record missing a federal prosecution WATCH covers Washington state records, not federal PACER records Search PACER.
Archived or restricted record missing Historical availability, sealing, vacation, court order or privacy restrictions Consult the court and applicable access rules.
Website troubleshooting: Washington Courts acknowledges that intermittent technical issues can affect its case-search service. Its help guidance suggests clearing the browser cache and retrying before contacting support.

Sealed Records, Vacated Convictions, FCRA and Public Access Limits

Washington criminal record access involves multiple legal frameworks, including the Criminal Records Privacy Act, court rules governing record access, and restrictions on certain confidential information.

Vacated or sealed matters

Under applicable Washington law, qualifying vacated cases, sealed matters and other protected categories are excluded from publicly released criminal-history results where required.

Pending charges

An arrest, accusation or pending prosecution does not establish guilt. Review the final court outcome before drawing conclusions.

Identity matching

Someone with the same name and date of birth may not be the subject of the intended record. WSP uses fingerprints for positive verification.

Employment and housing

Background screening can trigger Fair Credit Reporting Act obligations and additional Washington employment or housing restrictions. Use a legally compliant process.
