Criminal Court schedules and proceedings

Hamilton County Criminal Court Docket Search

Hamilton County Criminal Court maintains separate public docket lists for trials, arraignments, scheduling, drug court activity, grand jury results and bonds.

The county states that these dockets are ordinarily updated every Thursday for the following week, while the weekly master docket is updated every Monday.

Which Criminal Court docket should you open?

Official docket category What it helps you find When to use it
Court’s Trial Docket Cases listed for trial proceedings. When you know a criminal case is approaching trial.
Weekly Docket Schedule Criminal Court proceedings scheduled during the relevant week. To locate an upcoming court appearance or verify a court calendar.
Scheduling Dockets Cases listed for scheduling-related proceedings. When an attorney or notice references a scheduling setting.
Arraignment Docket Cases scheduled for arraignment proceedings. When checking a newly indicted or otherwise charged case.
Drug Court Docket Matters scheduled on the specialized Drug Court docket. For cases assigned to that court or treatment-related proceeding.
Weekly Master Docket by Bondsman Scheduled cases grouped according to bond-related information. When checking a case or bond-related court setting.
Grand Jury True Bills Cases or charges on which the grand jury returned a true bill. To check an indictment-related result.
Grand Jury No Bills Cases or charges for which an indictment was not returned on that presentation. When determining the grand jury action on a presented charge.
Grand Jury Dismissed Cases appearing on the county’s published grand jury dismissed list. As an initial indication requiring confirmation through the official case record.
Criminal Court Dispositions and Court Dates Public case-information lookup through the county’s separate application. To examine available case results and court dates.

How to search a weekly docket PDF

  1. Open the Criminal Court Dockets page

Go to the official county website and select the docket matching the proceeding you need.

  2. Open the linked PDF

Most schedule categories open a PDF document. Allow the browser or PDF reader to load the document.

  3. Use the PDF’s Find function

On Windows, press Ctrl+F. On a Mac, use Command+F. Enter the person’s surname, case number or another distinctive search term.

  4. Read the complete docket row

Check the court division, case identifier, hearing date, scheduled time and the surrounding context where shown.

  5. Confirm any time-sensitive hearing

Call the Criminal Court Clerk if you are attending court or making a decision based on the schedule. Docket changes may not appear in the online PDF after publication.

Official county warning: Hamilton County states that changes are made to the original court dockets but not necessarily the online copies. An online PDF should not be your only source when you must appear in court on a specific date.

Misdemeanors and preliminary felony proceedings

Hamilton County General Sessions Criminal Court Dockets

General Sessions Criminal Court is often the correct starting point after an arrest or citation. The county explains that this court handles misdemeanor judgments and traffic offenses, while felony cases can proceed through preliminary hearings before a possible grand jury referral.

It generally does not conduct jury trials.

What appears on the Sessions docket page?

Sessions Criminal 7 Day Docket

Use this schedule to review criminal matters listed for upcoming General Sessions proceedings. The linked PDF is useful when you know the approximate date.

Docket by Arresting Agency or Officer

The county separately offers a seven-day docket organized by arresting agency or arresting officer. This can help when you know the arresting agency but do not yet know the court case number.

Master Docket by Bondsman

This list is helpful when a case is associated with bond arrangements and you need to locate a scheduled Sessions proceeding.

Sessions Dispositions and Court Dates

Follow the official disclaimer and public case-information application to review available court outcomes and upcoming appearances.

Why a felony case may appear in both courts

A felony charge may first appear in General Sessions Criminal Court for an initial appearance or preliminary hearing. If the case is bound over and later indicted by a grand jury, the subsequent felony proceedings are handled in Criminal Court.

That means a searcher may need to examine both the General Sessions docket and the Criminal Court docket to understand the progression of the case.

Example: If a person was arrested in Chattanooga and initially appeared in General Sessions Court, a later indictment may create additional Criminal Court docket activity. Searching only the earlier Sessions schedule might miss a later arraignment, trial date or final disposition.

Understanding criminal case progression

Hamilton County Grand Jury Records: True Bills, No Bills and Dismissed Cases

Hamilton County’s Criminal Court docket page is particularly useful because it publishes separate grand jury lists. These should not be confused with trial verdicts.

Grand jury term What it generally means What it does not mean
True Bill The grand jury found sufficient basis to return an indictment on a presented charge. A conviction or determination that the accused is guilty.
No Bill / No True Bill The grand jury did not return an indictment on that presentation. A jury-trial acquittal or an automatic nationwide deletion of arrest records.
Dismissed A dismissal-related case entry appears in the county’s published list. That every related charge or later case was dismissed or expunged.
Indictment A formal criminal accusation that can proceed to Criminal Court. A final conviction.

For a reliable final result, find the case disposition after the relevant proceeding. A true bill may be followed by dismissal, plea, trial or other action. A no bill should be understood within the case’s full procedural history.

Understand the actual court outcome

How to Find Hamilton County Criminal Case Dispositions and Sentences

When checking someone’s criminal court record, the disposition is often more useful than the initial charge. A single criminal case may contain multiple counts, and the result of each count may be different.

What common court entries mean

Dismissed

The court dismissed a particular charge or case. Check whether other counts remained and whether the dismissal was followed by further action.

Guilty plea

The defendant entered a guilty plea to a charge. Review the resulting judgment and sentence for the court’s final action.

Not guilty

The defendant was found not guilty on the applicable charge after the relevant proceeding. Other counts, if any, should be reviewed separately.

Bound over

The case was sent onward from a preliminary stage, commonly toward grand jury consideration. This is not itself a conviction.

Continuance

The case or hearing was postponed. An updated schedule should be obtained before attending court.

Sentence or probation

These entries describe court-ordered consequences after a relevant adjudication or disposition. The signed judgment or order is the strongest documentary source.

How to verify a completed case

Start with the county’s online case-information search, locate the case number and inspect the available disposition entries. If you need confirmation for an official purpose, request a certified judgment, final order or other specific record from the Clerk.

If the case originally appeared in General Sessions Criminal Court but later proceeded to Criminal Court, ask the Clerk which court maintains the final judgment.

The official criminal court record keeper

Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk Contact and Location

The Criminal Court Clerk maintains records for both Criminal Court and the criminal division of General Sessions Court.

Records verification: Contact this office for General Sessions criminal case information

The county explains that its Criminal Court Clerk’s General Sessions operation also has an office at the jail for law-enforcement-related paperwork and operates continuously. That does not mean ordinary public records-copy counters are open twenty-four hours a day.

Before visiting: Verify the court division, case number and document you need. Both offices are in the Courts Building at 600 Market Street, but their records duties and room numbers differ.

Official copies and record verification

How to Obtain Certified Hamilton County Criminal Court Records

Online docket entries are useful for locating a case, but a certified court document may be required to prove the actual charge disposition, sentence or judgment.

Hamilton County’s official Criminal Court and General Sessions case-information disclaimers state that the Clerk’s offices charge for record searches and certified documentation. They do not provide one universal public fee amount for every request on those pages.

  1. Locate the case number

Start with the official Court Case Display search or a docket PDF. Record the defendant’s name, the correct court and the case identifier.

  2. Determine which court has the record

For a General Sessions misdemeanor judgment, contact the General Sessions Criminal office. For a criminal indictment, jury trial or later Criminal Court judgment, contact the Criminal Court division.

  3. Specify the exact document

Ask for the final disposition, judgment, sentencing order, docket history or another specific case filing. Saying only “criminal background check” may not identify the document you actually need.

  4. Ask whether the record is publicly available

The Clerk can advise on access restrictions, record location and whether the requested document can be released.

  5. Confirm fees and payment method

Ask the office for the record-search fee, copying charges, certification fee and any mailing or delivery costs. Do not assume civil court copy fees apply to Criminal Court.

  6. Review the certified document

Check the case number, court, defendant, counts, final outcome and certification before submitting it to another organization.

Practical request example: “I need a certified final disposition in Hamilton County Criminal Court for case number [case number]. Could you confirm availability, total fees and whether the record can be requested by mail or in person?”

Is Hamilton County Criminal Court Record Search Free?

The county publishes online criminal case information and docket schedules for public viewing. However, requesting a formal records search or certified court documentation through the Clerk may involve fees.

Tennessee statewide criminal history

Tennessee TBI Criminal Background Checks for Hamilton County

If you need a Tennessee statewide criminal-history search rather than the docket for one Hamilton County case, use the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).

The TBI’s Tennessee Open Records Information Services, called TORIS, provides a public name-based Tennessee adult criminal-history check. It is separate from the Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk’s case records.

How the TBI search works

  1. Open the TORIS public website

Use the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s official background-check page, not a county court payment portal.

  2. Select the general-public search

Tennessee offers a name-based state-only search for $29. Fingerprints are not required for this particular public search.

  3. Provide the required identifying information

Enter the name and other data requested by TORIS. Accurate identifiers reduce confusion but do not make the search fingerprint-confirmed.

  4. Pay the required fee

The state lists a nonrefundable $29 charge per public name-based search, including a search that does not return a criminal history.

  5. Review the electronic response

TBI provides an electronic result. TORIS warns that its PDF results may display more reliably on a desktop or laptop computer.

  6. Verify a particular Hamilton County disposition

If a case outcome is unclear, use the original court’s certified judgment or disposition to verify the record.

Name-based records are not fingerprint identification. The TBI’s public TORIS search covers Tennessee criminal-history information subject to state disclosure rules. It is not a complete nationwide FBI background check and does not replace a certified Criminal Court judgment.

Arrests and custody records

Hamilton County Jail, Booking and Inmate Search

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office provides a separate official inmate search. This is useful when you need to determine whether a person is listed in county custody rather than asking about a completed Criminal Court case.

How to use the Sheriff’s inmate lookup

  1. Open the official inmate-information page

Use the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office website at hcsheriff.gov.

  2. Enter the person’s surname

The official system supports searching by inmate last name or SPN number.

  3. Review the matching result

Check the available inmate information and compare any identifiers with the person you are trying to locate.

  4. Check the booking or bond information if necessary

The Sheriff’s Corrections section links to booking reports, inmate information and victim-notification services.

  5. Use the court search for the final outcome

An arrest or jail booking does not prove a conviction. Return to the appropriate General Sessions or Criminal Court records for later proceedings.

Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center

Address: 601 Justice Way
Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421
Telephone: 423-209-7125

For custody questions, use the detention center. For a court case’s final disposition, contact the relevant Criminal Court Clerk instead.

State corrections rather than county jail

Tennessee Felony Offender Information Lookup

If a person is or was in the custody or supervision of the Tennessee Department of Correction, use the state’s Felony Offender Information Lookup (FOIL).

FOIL offers free public access to available status, location, photo and active sentence information for qualifying felony offenders. Its search supports names and state correctional identifiers.

This does not mean FOIL contains every criminal defendant, misdemeanor case, local jail booking or court filing in Hamilton County.

Which custody source should you use? The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is the local jail-information source. Tennessee FOIL is the state felony offender source. PACER is the federal court case source. Each has a different purpose.

Appeals from criminal judgments

Hamilton County Criminal Appeals and Tennessee Appellate Records

A criminal case can continue after a trial court judgment if an appeal is filed. Tennessee has a Court of Criminal Appeals, and the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts provides a public appellate case-history search.

The official appellate search supports case number, case style, party name and business or organization searches.

If you are researching a Hamilton County conviction with a later appeal, use the appellate docket to locate the appellate decision, then refer back to the original Hamilton County Criminal Court for the underlying trial record and any subsequent action.

Different court levels: The Tennessee appellate search does not replace Hamilton County’s trial and Sessions Criminal Court docket systems. An appellate opinion may uphold, modify, reverse or remand a judgment, so avoid treating the original disposition as the complete history when an appeal occurred.

Restricted and expunged cases

Hamilton County Criminal Record Expungement and Missing Cases

Some Tennessee criminal charges and convictions may qualify for expungement under state law. Eligibility depends on the outcome, offense, prior record and other statutory requirements.

TBI explains that certain dismissed charges, acquittals, no true bills and nolle prosequi outcomes may be expunged without a charge to the defendant. Some eligible conviction and diversion cases follow different procedures and may require fees.

What to do if a case may be expunged

  1. Locate the original court and case number

Identify whether the matter was decided in General Sessions Criminal Court or Criminal Court.

  2. Obtain the final disposition

Check whether the case was dismissed, resulted in a not-guilty finding, received a no true bill or had some other outcome.

  3. Read Tennessee’s current eligibility guidance

Do not assume that every conviction is eligible or that a dismissed case has already been removed from every system.

  4. Use the appropriate local court process

The TBI explains that expungement begins at the local court level. The applicable court may need to issue or process an expungement order.

  5. Keep the signed order

Retain a certified copy of the expungement order in case records remain in a separate background-check company’s database or another agency needs proof of the action.

Why this matters for criminal-record searches: Some public records disappear from ordinary searches because access has been lawfully restricted. Others are simply unavailable online, archived or listed under a different name. The reasons are not interchangeable.

Resolve a missing or confusing record

Why Can’t I Find a Hamilton County Criminal Court Case Online?

Search problem Likely explanation Best next step
No defendant-name match Name variation, incomplete entry or wrong court Try alternate spellings and verify whether the case is in Sessions or Criminal Court.
Case appears in Sessions but not Criminal Court Felony may still be at the preliminary stage or never moved to Criminal Court Check the Sessions disposition and any grand jury activity.
Later felony court date missing from Sessions docket Case may have been bound over and indicted Check Criminal Court arraignment and weekly dockets.
Online PDF has a different hearing date Online docket may not reflect a later schedule change Call the responsible court office before attending.
No indictment result Grand jury action may not yet have occurred or may not be reflected in the selected list Check the official case-information search and contact the Clerk.
Record is older or archived Not all historical files may be available through the current online interface Request the specific file from the Criminal Court Clerk.
Person not listed in county jail Person was released, transferred, or is in another custody system Check the appropriate jail or state offender system.
No public record despite known case Possible expungement, restriction, confidentiality or system limitation Ask the responsible official custodian about lawful access.
Do not interpret “no result” as proof of no criminal history. A name search, docket schedule, county jail roster or TBI public history search may each exclude information available from another legally authorized source.

Important Criminal Court Record Accuracy and Privacy Rules

Hamilton County itself warns that positive identification of an individual is not possible from its public criminal case-information system. Names may be confused or misused, and unrelated individuals may share the same name.

Check the court outcome

  • An arrest is not a conviction.
  • A grand jury true bill is not a finding of guilt.
  • A preliminary hearing is not a criminal trial.
  • Each count may have a different disposition.
  • A later appeal may change the outcome.

Use records legally

  • Respect sealed and expunged records.
  • Do not rely on a similar-name match alone.
  • Use certified documents when required.
  • Follow applicable background-screening laws.
  • Do not treat a docket PDF as an identity-confirmed background check.

If records are being used for employment or housing eligibility, the Fair Credit Reporting Act and other laws may apply. A casual county-court search is not necessarily a legally compliant consumer background report.
